MICHIGAN BASKETBALL of seniors Zack Novak and Stu Dou- glass are coming to a close, but not without some significant inroads into U-M history. The duo has left its mark — not only in the establish- ment of John Beilein's program at Michigan, but in the Wolverines' an- nals themselves. Here are some career categories 4. Zack Novak 4. He has never missed a contest in his four-year U-M career, and with an appearance in U-M's NCAA Tournament opener, will take over the top of the list. The win snapped a six-game losing streak against OSU, keeping the Wolverines in contention for the Big Ten championship. The Wolverines limited the Buckeyes to 20 points and 0-of-9 three-point shooting Record: 24-9 National Ranking: No. 10, Associated Press, No. 14 ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll Best Win — 56-51 over Ohio State: Michigan stared down the No. 6 Buckeyes Michigan Basketball Rewind Covering Feb. 18-March 10 featuring one or both of the Michigan seniors (through March 11): in the first half, while building a 25-20 advantage. U-M then stayed strong through- out a grinding second half. OSU twice pulled within three points in the final two minutes, but each time the Wolverines answered. Seniors Zack Novak and Stu Douglass each hit huge, step-back jumpers to keep the Buckeyes at bay. Then twice down the stretch, freshman Trey Burke drove for crucial buckets, the last a kiss high off the glass over childhood friend and now rival Jared Sullinger, with nine seconds remaining. Burke led the Wolverines with 17 points and five assists, while Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 13 on an efficient, 4-of-5 effort and Jordan Morgan notched his first career double-double, with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Worst Loss — 75-61 against Purdue: Senior Night at Crisler appeared to be the perfect stage to pulverize Purdue and stay in the thick of the Big Ten race. The Boil- ermakers had other ideas, racing to a hot start and pulling away, after a Michigan rally, for a 14-point win. Michigan's recently staunch defense crumbled a bit, Purdue's Terone Johnson go- ing for 22 points on a variety of drives and pull-ups, while senior Robbie Hummel scored 17 — including a pair of three-point crushers to skyrocket the Boilermakers' lead from four to 10 late in the game. Michigan got 12 points from Novak in his final game at Crisler, 12 from Burke and 10 from Hardaway, along with seven points and five assists from Douglass. But U-M's rally from double-digit deficits to pull ahead by two in the second half proved false hope during one that got away. MVP — Burke: The freshman just can't be denied. He leads Michigan in scoring and assists, he's come up big in the clutch, and the Wolverines wouldn't have come close to a Big Ten title with- out him. He also set a scoring record for a freshman in the Big Ten Tournament, piling up 30 in the quarterfinal victory over Minnesota. On The Rise — Hardaway: The sophomore endured a major shooting struggle in the middle portion of the Big Ten schedule, but finished the regu- lar season on the upswing. His effort in a crucial road win at Illinois went a long way in propelling the Wolverines toward a Big Ten title. Hardaway led all scorers with 25 points, connecting on 6 of 7 from the field, all four of his three- point attempts, and 9 of 10 from the free throw line, with 11 rebounds. Game To Watch — At this stage, the next one is always the one to watch. In this case, that's Michigan's opener against Ohio (the real one) University on March 16, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Wolverines enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed in the Midwest Regional. — John Borton Tim Hardaway Jr. ranked second on the Wolverines in scoring through 33 games, put- ting up an average of 14.6 points per contest this season.
