MICHIGAN BASKETBALL BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK Freshman of the Week distinction on Feb. 27. The rookie averaged 15.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 41.0 minutes per game, including a full 45 in Michigan's overtime win at Northwestern. In addition to Burke's half-dozen Freshman of the Week • Freshman guard Trey Burke picked up his sixth Big Ten awards in the Big Ten, he's also been the conference's Player of the Week on one occasion. The Freshman of the Week honor tied him with Indiana's Cody Zeller for the most weeks in capturing the award. • Senior Zack Novak has been named a 2012 Capital One Academic All-America third-team member, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Novak became the first Michigan player to earn that distinction since 1984. He's the sixth in the program's history to be so honored, joining Steve Grote, Marty Bodnar, Mark Bodnar, Paul Heuerman and Dan Pelekoudas. Novak became one of three players in the Big Ten this season to reach Academic All-America status. Ohio State's Aaron Craft claimed first-team honors and Northwestern's Drew Crawford made the second team. • Michigan's 56-51 win over Ohio State on Feb. 18 lifted the Wolverines to 73-97 all time against the Buckeyes, in- cluding 45-37 in games played in Ann Arbor. It represented Michigan's third win of the season over a top-10 opponent, with the Buckeyes entering the contest ranked No. 6 in the nation. • U-M held the Buckeyes to a season-low 20 points in the first half on 10-of-26 shooting (39 percent), including a 0-of-9 effort from three-point range. • Redshirt sophomore Jordan Morgan registered the first double-double of his career in the victory over Ohio State, notching 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Wolver- ines' 67-55 win in Evanston pushed them to 105-56 in the all- time series versus the Wildcats, including 44-34 on the road. • U-M shot 38 three-pointers in the Northwestern game (a Big Ten season high) and connected on 14 of them. The Wolverines hit three in overtime to take control of the game. • Michigan tied a season high with six blocks against the Wildcats. Sophomore Tim Hardaway Jr. led the way, blocking a career-high three shots. • The Wolverines' 75-61 home loss to Purdue on Feb. 25 tory, Burke boosted his season total to 143, surpassing Gary Grant's freshman record of 140, set in 1984-85. • Michigan secured Big Ten win No. 13 at Penn State on March 4, 71-65. That gave the Wolverines their most confer- ence victories in a season since 1993-94 (13-5). • The Wolverines shot a season-best 55.6 percent (10 of 18) on three-pointers at State College. • Michigan's 73-69 overtime win in the Big Ten Tournament dropped them to 62-84 in the all-time series against the Boilermakers, 38-33 at home. • Senior Corey Person came off the bench in his final home game to score a career-high four points and grab one re- bound. • Purdue turned the ball over just five times, represent- ing the lowest turnover total by a Michigan opponent all season. • Michigan's March 1 win at Illinois snapped a 13-game losing streak at the Illini's Assembly Hall. The 72-61 victory marked the Wolverines' first in Champaign since Jan. 17, 1995. Michigan is now 74-85 in the all-time series against the Illini. • Hardaway snagged a career-high 11 rebounds in the victory over Illinois. Meanwhile, with five assists in the vic- quarterfinals against Minnesota on March 9 boosted the Wolverines to 24-9, the most wins for Michigan head coach John Beilein in a season at U-M. The Wolverines moved to 85-65 all time against the Gophers, including 3-1 in the Big Ten Tournament. • Ohio State knocked the Wolverines out of the Big Ten Tournament for the third straight year on March 10, 77-55 in the semifinals. U-M is now 73-98 all time against OSU, and 0-6 in conference tournament play. • Person notched career highs with seven points and two rebounds in the OSU game. Burke tied a career high with seven rebounds in the game. • Morgan wound up sixth in the Big Ten in rebounds this season, averaging 6.3 per game in conference contests. He was second in the league in field goal percentage, hitting at a 58.5-percent clip. • Douglass ended up 15th in the Big Ten in three-point shooting percentage, connecting on 38.7 in league games.
