M ichigan rose up for a top-five finish in the Learfield Directors' Cup standings this season. The Wol- verines wound up third in the nation in the all-sports competition, behind only annual winner Stanford and Ohio State. The Cardinal captured the crown with 1,526.00 total points, spurred by national championships in women's tennis and men's soccer. The Buck- eyes checked in second with 1,303.50 points, bolstered by a national title in men's volleyball plus second-place national finishes in rowing and fenc- ing. The Wolverines put 1,196.75 points on the board, with five sports finish- ing in the top five nationally. Wom- en's water polo, softball and wom- en's tennis gave Michigan a lift in the spring, with the water polo team finishing fourth and the latter two fifth in the nation. The water polo effort provided 83 points for U-M, while the softball ranking yielded an additional 78 and women's tennis 73.
