WHERE ARE THEY NOW? consider giving up or taking a step back, Young stressed. "I had some personal doubts at times in dealing with the pain and getting through rehab," she recalled. "Hutch had a way of pushing and motivating you to do things you didn't think you were capable of doing. There was never room in her mind, and she didn't leave room in my mind, to think I wasn't going to get back on the field. "The team was counting on me, and that's what motivated me to push through my rehab every day." She still watches Michigan softball closely. She hurts when the Wolver‑ ines make it to the World Series and can't quite get to the top of the moun‑ tain, like they did two years after she graduated. Young knew that sting twice in her career, but now dreams of even get‑ ting the chance to feel it again some‑ day with the Blue Devils. "Mistakes are magnified that much more," she said. "You work all season for that moment. That's really tough, when you come up short. "But at the same time, it's a great feeling, with a lot of pride. Every‑ one that's gone through the Michigan program still feels such a sense of pride. "When people ask me, 'Where did you go to school? Where did you play softball?' and I'm able to say 'Michigan,' that was created through Hutch's success and our ability to get to the World Series. "Now I have the opportunity here at Duke to do the same thing. Every decision I'm making, all of the hard work I'm doing, is to create a great legacy for the Duke softball program for many years to come." ❏ Young paced the Wolverines in wins and strikeouts for four consecutive seasons from 2000-03.
