Michigan growing up in St. Paul,
Minn., and he certainly didn't know
much about the steeplechase, the
event that would become his staple.
He learned quickly under former
Michigan coach Alex Gibby, who rec-
ommended he give it a shot when
Ferlic was a sophomore.
Just describing the steeplechase
to those who haven't heard of it is
a chore in itself. With high hurdles
and water pits as obstacles, the race
requires incredible stamina and con-
centration.
It takes guts just to agree to do it, let
alone make a career of it.
