AUGUST 2017 ◆ 15 placing fifth in the 800-yard freestyle relay and 13th with the 200-yard freestyle relay team at the NCAA Championships. Indi- vidually, she qualified for the national meet in the 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle. Other rookies that stood out included basketball player Jocelyn Willoughby. The first-year guard concluded her inaugural season by being named to the All-ACC Freshman Team and the All-ACC Academic Team. She was second among ACC fresh- men in scoring (9.8 points per game) and rebounding (6.8 per game), and led new- comers in steals (1.7 per game). A pair of lacrosse players also excelled. Midfielder Sammy Mueller became the eighth Cavalier woman to earn Freshman of the Year honors after ranking third on the team with 37 goals, including a team-best five game-winners. Attack Michael Krause was the only rookie selected for the men's All-ACC team (just the seventh UVA first- year ever to achieve that feat) and was also tabbed as the ACC Freshman of the Year. He led UVA with 34 goals and 56 points, and also received honorable mention USILA All-America honors. In addition, women's tennis player Rosie Johanson was named to the All-ACC team by the league's coaches, while women's soccer defender Zoe Morse, women's bas- ketball point guard Dominique Toussaint and baseball pitcher Noah Murdock earned spots on their respective ACC All-Rookie squads. BREAKOUT ATHLETES Third-year first baseman Pavin Smith was a contributor from the get-go when he ar- rived in Charlottesville two years ago. He batted .317 with 15 home runs and 101 RBI his first two seasons, but took his game to another level in 2017. Smith hit .342 with 13 homers and a UVA single-season record 77 RBI. Most notewor- thy was the fact Smith had more homers than strikeouts (12). He drew 38 walks and ranked as the nation's fourth-toughest bat- ter to strike out. Smith was tabbed as first- team All-ACC performer and was listed as a semifinalist for the 2017 Golden Spikes Award. He finished his career second on the school's all-time list for career RBI (178) and tied for sixth in homers (28). He was selected seventh overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first round of the Major League Baseball Draft, one spot ahead of teammate and outfielder/pitcher Adam Haseley (who was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies). The duo became the first set of position players from the same college to be selected in the top 10 of an MLB Draft since Oklahoma State's Monty Fariss and Robin Ventura in 1988. Women's soccer midfielder Alexis Shaf- fer was a steady performer for the Cavaliers during her four-year career, but especially good in her final season with the Wahoos. She started all 22 games, led UVA in both goals (13) and assists (seven), and tallied three game-winning markers. Along the way, Shaffer was named first- team All-ACC, the ACC Offensive Player of the Year, the ACC Midfielder of the Year, a National Soccer Coaches Association of America first-team All-American and a Her- mann Trophy semifinalist. Shaffer was taken with the 25th pick of the 2017 National Women's Soccer League Draft in January. ◆ Jocelyn Willoughby ranked second among ACC freshmen in scoring (9.8 points per game) and rebounding (6.8 per contest), and led newcomers in steals (1.7 per outing).
