30 ◆ CAVALIER CORNER As we approach the 2017‑18 academic year, we are welcom‑ ing new first‑year and trans‑ fer student‑athletes who are arriving on Grounds and the UVA Athletics Department and coaching staffs are ramping up for 65 newly adopted NCAA legislative items that are ef‑ fective Aug. 1. Not all of the newly adopted rules directly affect the UVA Athletics De‑ partment and coaching staffs, but the rules below do and are the most noteworthy: • Former UVA student‑athletes may have on‑Grounds contact with prospective student‑athletes. • Coaching staff members may have telephone calls and text messages with any aged prospective student‑athlete the day before and the day of the prospective student‑athletes unofficial visit to Grounds. • Coaching staff members may meet with prospective student‑athletes on an unofficial visit within a one‑mile radius of Grounds. • Coaching staff members may provide current student‑ athletes with retroactive athletics aid to the beginning of the academic year at any point during the academic year (provided that with such aid, they remain under their sport's NCAA financial aid limit). • Coaching staff members and student‑athletes from each team will collaborate on a time management plan that outlines the time demands required of team members during the academic year. Included in the plan: • 21 extra days off for student‑athletes during the academic year. • An off day means no athletic or required activities may occur on a day off. • Any required activity the student‑athletes will participate in (e.g., hosting prospective student‑ athletes; single team community service; compliance meetings; promotional activities, etc.) must be identified ahead of time and cannot occur on a day off. As always, if VAF members have questions about NCAA rules, please "Ask Before You Act" and contact the UVA Compliance Office.
