NOVEMBER 2017 ■ 115 Phillips is spending three days a week in Fayetteville, N.C., at a mental health facility due to her graduate program re- quirements. That has limited her training opportunities to two days a week, but it hasn't shown in her results. Phillips is one of five women to go along with three men on this year's roster. Creat- ing a meshing of skills is always a challenge for Miller. Recruiting for rifle is different than other college sports. Sometimes the athletes recruit the Wolfpack coaches if they are interested in studying a specific major. NCSU has faced eight ranked op- ponents thus far, but head coach Keith Miller said rankings don't go in flux as much during the spring. "The way rankings are done with rifle are kind of interesting," Miller said. "It is a two-phase thing. The first phase is the fall phase that we are in now. How that works is that you are as good as your last score. "At the end of the fall, the system changes and it mimics more with what we are going to do with our NCAA qualification procedure. That takes your top three scores prior to three different sites, and uses that average to rank." • NC State was essentially the seventh-best team in the GARC when it joined the league, and it took a number of years to get a league win. The competi - tion has helped push the program to rise up. Having a chance to host matches at renovated Reynolds Coliseum is another key aspect. NC State has one last home meet Nov. 19 against North Georgia, and the Wolfpack want to have the most visually interesting rifle matches in the country. "The last couple of years we've actually been able to have some home competitions," Miller said. "That has been an awesome experience. Prior to that, we really didn't have many for a number of years. "It has given us a platform to improve college rifle. We have kind of upped the model. We are trying to stretch the envelope of what college rifle looks like for fan and spectator experience." ■ Key Matches • Vs. North Georgia in Raleigh, Nov. 19 — NC State doesn't get many home matches, with just two this season. The second one is against No. 20-ranked North Georgia in an all-day event. • Vs. Kentucky and at Army in West Point, N.Y., Jan. 14-15 — The Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association ranked Kentucky No. 3 in the country Oct. 24. NC State faces No. 15-ranked Army the next day. • Vs. Nebraska and at Navy in Annapolis, Md., Jan. 20-21 — NC State will go against No. 14-ranked Nebraska on the first day and then No. 12 Navy, the host of the event. NCSU fifth-year senior Lauren Phillips will face her old school (Nebraska).
