"We monitor certain national- level competitions that the good clubs send people to. We attend a few of those." Miller has had teams in the past that were all men, but welcomes a true coed- based squad. "It doesn't really matter to us until it comes down to us figuring out who is rooming with whom at the hotels when we travel," Miller said. The coach knows some of his performers come from military families. For instance, senior Derya Pekari split her prep career between Rota, Spain, and Fairfax (Va.) Woodson High. Her father is a captain in the U.S. Navy, and she wanted to be a part of NC State's rifle team. "When she started shooting [in high school], her dad was at the Pentagon and we got to know her," Miller said. "She spent her last year of high school in Rota, Spain. "She is one of the finalists for the Leader of the Pack award, which recognizes lead- ership, scholarship and community activi- ties. I'm proud of her for being a well- rounded student." Sophomore Kendra Jacobs spent her freshman year at Air Force Academy be- fore making the move to NC State. The Trent, S.D., native was also talented in soc- cer and gymnastics, but realized Air Force wasn't the best fit for her. She approached NC State and the rest is history. "It's a close-knit group and we only in- troduced one new face and that was Ken- dra," Miller said. "She has adapted well and is an integral part of the team."
