36 NOV. 27, 2017 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED to pull out a 15-14 victory. Stanford rushed for a season-low 81 yards in the game. Stanford ranked 98th in the land in passing of- fense (184.3 yards per game) and 77th in pass ef- ficiency (127.71) heading into the third weekend of November. It has rotated quarterbacks throughout the sea- son, but it seems that sophomore K.J. Costello has finally emerged as the main man under center. Costello's performance in the 30-22 upset of Washington Nov. 10 gave him the edge. He passed for 211 yards, but also stretched the field with his arm and made plays with his legs. Notre Dame ranked 79th nationally in passing yards allowed per game (234.5) through Nov. 11, but has actually performed better than that number would indicate. The high yardage totals have more to do with teams racking up passing yards after the Irish had taken a big lead. Notre Dame ranked 35th in pass efficiency de- fense (117.2 rating), 18th in yards allowed per at- tempt (6.14) and 14th in yards allowed per comple- tion (10.86), numbers more indicative of the team's success with its pass defense. Advantage: Notre Dame NOTRE DAME RUNNING GAME VS. STANFORD RUN DEFENSE The Irish and Cardinal both build their offenses around the ground attack, and as good as Stanford has been this season running the ball Notre Dame has been even better. The Irish rushed for at least 318 yards in seven of their first 10 games and ranked sixth nationally with a 303.2-yard average. In addition, their 6.72 yards GAME PREVIEW: STANFORD Senior nose tackle Harrison Phillips has been dominant in the middle of the Cardinal defense, compiling a team-leading 73 stops and 12.5 tackles for loss through 10 games.
