64 THE WOLVERINE JUNE/JULY 2018 BY AUSTIN FOX I n early May, NFL Network began a countdown of the top 100 players in the NFL for the 2018 season, and the first former Wolverine to make the cut was Tennessee Titans offen- sive tackle Taylor Lewan at No. 78. The network had him pegged in an almost identical spot to wrap up the 2017 campaign, placing him at No. 72 overall. "I don't think I'm the best tackle in the NFL," he said at the conclusion of last year. "I think I played the best of all the tackles in the NFL [throughout the 2017 season]. "I haven't earned that right yet, though — that belongs to guys like [Washington Redskins tackle] Trent Williams. I love the way he plays, be- cause he doesn't take crap from any- body. He plays the game the way it should be played, and that's through the whistle and angry." Since graduating from Michigan following the 2013 season, Lewan has made quite the impact in the NFL. He was selected by the Titans with the 11th overall pick in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, and has gone on to start 53 of the 58 games he's ap- peared in with the team. Lewan was also named to consecu- tive Pro Bowls in 2016 and 2017, and was tabbed to the Pro Football Writ- ers Association All-Rookie Team in 2014. The MLB CLAYTON RICHARD TURNS IN DOMINANT START AGAINST ST. LOUIS Former Wolverine and current San Diego Padres pitcher Clayton Rich- ard threw an absolute gem against the St. Louis Cardinals May 13, toss- ing eight innings and only allowing two runs. He also yielded just five hits, struck out 10 batters — a season- high — and only walked one. The eight innings tied a season- high for Richard, who helped propel San Diego to a 5-3 victory. FORMER WOLVERINES ON MLB ROSTERS Through May 14 • Rich Hill (Played at U-M from 2000-02), SP, Los Angeles Dodgers: Has started all five games he's appeared in this season for the 16-24 Dodgers … Has compiled a 1-2 record with a 6.20 ERA in 24 2 ⁄3 innings. • Clayton Richard (2005), SP, San Di- ego Padres: Owns a 2-5 record and a 5.20 ERA in nine starts for the 16-26 Pa- dres … Has allowed three or fewer runs in five of his nine starts this season, and his 53 2 ⁄3 innings leads the team. The NBA JAMAL CRAWFORD SHOWS HE STILL HAS GAME Though the Minnesota Timber- wolves' season came to an end against the Houston Rockets April 25 in the first round of the playoffs, for- mer U-M star and 38-year-old guard Jamal Crawford turned in one of his best performances of the year. Lewan was selected by the Tennessee Titans with the 11th pick of the first round in the 2014 NFL Draft.
