Senior forward Tony Calderone led the Big Ten in goals, also both overall and in conference games, with 25 total goals, 18 of which came during Big Ten com- petition. BEST UPSETS Best Female Team Upset — Wom- en's Basketball over Ohio State: Just nine days after falling to the Buckeyes in overtime at the Crisler Center, Mich- igan got its revenge on the road Jan. 16. Ranked No. 8 in the country, Ohio State led U-M 54-49 with 2:59 left in the third quarter and was looking to close out the Wolverines for another win. Michigan wouldn't surrender, scor- ing nine straight points in the next 1:59 to take a 58-54 lead. The Maize and Blue would hold on to that lead for the rest of the game and win 84-75, giving Michigan its first win over a ranked opponent on the year, and the only ranked road victory the team recorded in 2017-18 (they later topped No. 13 Maryland at home). Junior center Hallie Thome led the charge, scoring 27 points and grabbing 11 rebounds for the double-double. Senior guard Katelynn Flaherty added 21, 18 of which came in the second half, and junior guard Nicole Munger tallied a career-high 20 points. The victory marked Ohio State's first loss of the season in Big Ten play, and U-M's fifth top-10 victory in program annals. Best Male Team Upset — MEN'S LACROSSE over Notre Dame: March 21 was a historic afternoon for the Michigan men's lacrosse team. The Wolverines, feeling good after three straight wins, traveled to Notre Dame to face the No. 4 Fighting Irish as a heavy underdog. Michigan had al- ready lost two games against ranked foes in 2018 (12-9 against No. 18 Penn and 15-11 to No. 11 Yale), and most expected Notre Dame to deliver a third defeat. In fact, U-M had only beaten one ranked team since the program was founded in 2012. That changed when Michigan topped Notre Dame 13-12, thanks in part to junior midfielder Brent Nose- worthy, who scored five goals and tacked on an assist. U-M recorded its first-ever victory over a ranked team on the road, and the first win against a team ranked in the top five in school history, qualify- ing it as the program's biggest win. U-M would finish the season 8-6 af- ter winning at No. 14 Penn State in the regular-season finale, giving the team one more memorable upset. BEST INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCES Best Female Individual Perfor- mance — Indoor track runner ERIN FINN at the Simmons-Harvey Quad: Already one of the most decorated fe- male athletes in University of Michi- gan history, Finn dominated the 3,000-meter run (approx. 1.864 miles) at the Simmons-Harvey Quad Jan. 20., setting a personal, school and state of Michigan record for the event with a time of 8:58.69. The clocking was three seconds faster than her previous per- sonal best and the fastest time ever run by a Michigander, the third-fastest time in Big Ten history, the third-fast- est time ever run by a collegian in the month of January and the 23rd-fastest time in collegiate history overall. Throughout her five-year career at U-M, Finn set four school records, was named a finalist for the 2017 AAU James E. Sullivan Award (only female finalist in Michigan history, second finalist overall), won the 2018 Big Ten Medal of Honor, was a four- time NCAA Championships runner- up, a 2016 Olympic Trials qualifier, a nine-time U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All- American (tied for most in school his- tory), 10-time Big Ten individual cham- pion, and named both indoor (2016) and outdoor (2014) Big Ten Track and Field Female Athlete of the Year, along with numerous other honors. The men's lacrosse team recorded its second-ever ranked win and its first over a top-five squad against No. 4 Notre Dame on March 21.
