Prep left-handed pitcher Drew Rom — who had signed with U-M — was chosen in the fourth round by the Baltimore Orioles. The Kentucky native won the Bluegrass State's Mr. Baseball award this year and was also named a second-team All-Amer- ican by Rawlings-Perfect Game. According to fortthomasmatters. com, he signed a $650,000 contract with the Orioles June 22 and will not attend Michigan. Rom has since be- gun his professional career in Sara- sota, Fla., with the Gulf Coast League Orioles. Left-handed pitcher Steven Haj- jar of North Andover, Mass., was tabbed by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 21st round with the 635th overall pick. Unlike Rom, though, Hajjar still plans on attending Michigan, accord- ing to Joshua Boyd of Georgetown. wickedlocal.com. Finally, junior quarterback Shea Patterson of the U-M football team was tabbed by the Texas Rangers with the 1,169th overall pick in the 39th round of the draft. Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News tweeted that the signal-caller signed a 2019 contract to play "after he completes his football eligibility at Michigan," meaning he will be on the field for the Wolverines in the fall. QUINN HUGHES IS MICHIGAN'S LONE SELECTION IN NHL DRAFT The Vancouver Canucks grabbed Michigan rising sophomore defense- man Quinn Hughes with the seventh overall pick in the NHL Draft June 22. With the selection, he became the 22nd first-rounder in program his- tory and the 10th to go in the top 10. "I'm very proud, and I've heard a lot of great things about Vancou- ver," he said. "They're a great hockey market, and I'm really excited. It's a dream come true." The Wolverines have now had an impressive 68 icers chosen in the history of the NHL Draft, which de- buted in 1969. On top of that, the Maize and Blue have seen at least one skater come off the board in ev- ery edition since 1995, and one in every draft overall with 1970-72, 1981 and 1995 being the lone exceptions. The MLB RICH HILL IMPRESSES DURING SECOND HALF OF JUNE Former Wolverine and current Los Angeles Dodgers left-handed pitcher Rich Hill was activated from the dis- abled list June 19, and proceeded to have an outstanding rest of the month. He threw a combined 17 2 ⁄3 innings in three starts, allowing a total of just five earned runs, which was good for a 2.55 ERA over that span. Hill's best outing came June 19 in Chicago when he threw six scoreless frames against the Cubs, surrender- ing just three hits while striking out six. FORMER WOLVERINES ON MLB ROSTERS Through July 19 • Rich Hill (Played at U-M from 2000- 02), LHP, Los Angeles Dodgers: Has spent time on the disabled list this season due to a nagging blister on his finger, but had made 11 starts and one relief appearance for the 53-43 Dodg- ers heading into the All-Star break … Posted a 2-4 record and 4.55 ERA … Recorded 60 strikeouts in 55 1 ⁄3 innings of work. • Ryan LaMarre (2008-11), OF, Chi- cago White Sox: Was designated for as- signment by the Minnesota Twins July 2 and claimed off waivers by the 33-62 White Sox July 9 … Owns a .262 batting average with nine RBI and one stolen base in 45 games with the two clubs. • Clayton Richard (2005), LHP, San Diego Padres: Possesses a 7-8 record and 4.43 ERA in 20 starts for the 40-59 Padres … Had an outstanding month of June, though, in which he posted a 3.27 ERA in 33 frames thrown, spanning five starts. ❏ Duncan Robinson • NBA He signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Miami Heat July 10, after impressing in NBA Summer League action. Robinson aver- aged 12.8 points and 3.2 rebounds in 26.7 minutes in four contests. Derrick Walton Jr. • NBA Having paired up with former U-M teammate Robinson, Walton has also impressed in four NBA Summer League games for the Heat. The point guard tallied 11.8 points, 6.8 assists and 3.2 re- bounds per contest, while averaging a team-leading 28.7 minutes per game. Ryan LaMarre• MLB After being claimed off waivers by the White Sox, LaMarre made his Windy City debut July 13, starting in left field and batting eighth. He proceeded to go 2 for 4 at the plate, driving in a run with an RBI single in the third inning, which helped lead Chicago to a 9-6 victory over Kansas City. — Austin Fox HEADLINERS Former Michigan athletes in the news this month Through July 19, Hill has pitched in 12 games (11 starts) and compiled a 2-4 record with a 4.55 ERA.
