www.BLUEANDGOLD.com NOV. 12, 2018 15 UNDER THE DOME 90 Years Ago: Nov. 8, 1928 With its 11-game winning streak, Army enters the matchup in Yankee Stadium versus 4-2 Notre Dame as the prohibitive favorite to capture the national title. The streak includes an 18-0 trouncing of the Fighting Irish a year earlier, and road victories this season against traditional powers Harvard (15-0) and Yale (18-6). After a scoreless first half in front of a capacity crowd of 78,188, Fighting Irish head coach Knute Rockne gives his fatigued squad one of the memorable speeches in Americana sports lore. The first consensus All-American in Notre Dame history, halfback George Gipp died his senior year Dec. 14, 1920 from streptococcal throat infection. The coach relays to his team that on his deathbed, Gipp requested that someday "when the breaks are beating the boys," to tell them to "win one for the Gipper." "I don't where I'll be then, Rock. But I'll know about it, and I'll be happy," Rockne said of Gipp's final words. After falling behind 6-0, Notre Dame ties the score on a one-yard run by Jack Chevigny, tallies with 2:30 left on a 38-yard pass from John Niemiec to Johnny "One Play" O'Brien and makes a valiant goal- line stand as time expires to record the legendary 12-6 triumph. 60 Years Ago: Nov. 8, 1958 Junior quarterback George Izo, who would become the second pick in the 1960 NFL Draft, becomes the first player in Notre Dame history to eclipse 300 passing yards in a game, coming off the bench to complete 18 of 26 attempts for 332 yards — the most in all of college football in four years — and two touchdowns to Monty Stickles. However, six Irish turnovers (five fumbles) allow the Panthers, led by All-American Mike Ditka, to win when they score the go-ahead touchdown with 11 seconds remaining. Notre Dame also converts its first-ever two-point conversion, an Izo pass to fullback Nick Pietrosante. This was the first year for the two-point option. 45 Years Ago: Nov. 10, 1973 In No. 5-ranked Notre Dame's hard-fought 31-10 victory at Pitt, where it led only 17-10 entering the fourth quarter, fullback Wayne "The Train" Bullock carries 27 times for 167 yards and scores all four touchdowns, three on the ground and one on a pass from quarterback Tom Clements. On a blustery, snowy day, Clements — who is hampered by a groin injury and passes only four times — leans on Bullock to "carry" the day. Bullock's rushing total would be the most in head coach Ara Parseghian's 11 seasons at the helm. Meanwhile, Pitt freshman phenom Tony Dorsett's 209 rushing yards is a new single-game record against Notre Dame. Irish free safety and captain Mike Townsend is the standout on defense with four touchdown-saving tackles, two passes broken up in the end zone and his 13th career interception. 25 Years Ago: Nov. 13, 1993 In the third matchup ever in Notre Dame Stadium be- tween No. 1 (Florida State) and No. 2 (Notre Dame), head coach Lou Holtz's Fighting Irish prevail with a 31-24 victory to move into the top spot with a 10-0 record — the first time it left the field in the edifice with that mark. (See pages 60-61 for more on the game.) 20 Years Ago: Nov. 14, 1998 Senior running back Autry Denson — currently in his fourth season as Notre Dame's running backs coach — becomes the school's all-time rushing leader after a 107-yard effort during a 30-0 win versus Navy in Jack Kent Cooke Stadium that improves the Irish record to 8-1. His career total of 4,192 surpasses the 13-year standard held by Allen Pinkett (4,131, not including bowls), and Denson's 4,318 final mark remains No. 1 20 years later while seemingly becoming unbreak- able because of players leaving for the NFL after their junior seasons. — Lou Somogyi Anniversaries In Notre Dame Football History: Nov. 8‑14 YOU DON'T WAIT FOR MAIL DELIVERY!
