However, head coach Pat Fitzger- ald's group did not go away quietly. Senior quarterback Clayton Thorson found sophomore wide receiver Ri- ley Lees for a 27-yard touchdown to answer the Irish field goal and cut the deficit to 24-14. The tide almost completely turned to Northwestern's favor on the fol- lowing possession, when the Wild- cats blocked fifth-year senior Tyler Newsome's punt and converted it into a touchdown to make it a 24-21 with seven minutes to go in the game. A holding penalty on the ensuing kickoff put the Irish at their own 11- yard line, needing a first down or two to avoid giving Northwestern good field position if forced to punt. However, Notre Dame did better than that. Junior quarterback Ian Book found junior wide receiver Chase Claypool for 21 yards to open the drive, and then Book produced a nine-yard gain on the ground to put Notre Dame at its own 41-yard line in a hurry. Af- ter a false start by sophomore guard Aaron Banks on second down, Book fired a 15-yard strike to senior wide receiver Miles Boykin to keep the chains moving.
