notable numbers 1 The men's tennis team opened the spring season No. 1 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings for the fourth time in the last eight seasons. The squad boasts five ranked singles players, including three of the top seven, and three of the land's top nine doubles squads. Virginia field hockey players were named to the 2012 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-American teams — fifth-years Paige Selenski and Michelle Vittese were first-team selections, while third-year Elly Buckley was honored on the second team. The honors marked the fourth for Selenski, the ACC Offensive Player of the Year, and third for Vittese and Buckley. Virginia has had a representative in the prestigious Senior Bowl in each of the last five years. Offensive tackle Oday Aboushi is playing in the game this year, while inside linebacker Steve Greer will appear in the East-West Shrine Game and running back Perry Jones has accepted an invite to the inaugural Raycom College Football All-Star Classic. Touchdowns scored in the opening round of the North Carolina state playoffs by early enrollee LaChaston Smith. Although the 6‑0, 225-pounder missed most of his senior season at South Iredell with an injury, he opened the playoffs with a 191-yard performance and scored on more than half of his 13 carries. He also earned MVP honors of the 2AA state championship game after scoring three touchdowns, but he is expected to play linebacker in college. The UVa wrestling team earned the highest national ranking in program history Jan. 15, when it moved up eight spots to No. 11 in the USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll after a sixth-place showing at the Southern Scuffle Jan. 2.
