cavaliersports behind the scenes Track & Field Assistant Coach Martin Maric Few people have the honor of being selected as the top athlete in their county. But that is exactly what happened for University of Virginia track and field assistant coach Martin Maric, who was honored as one of Croatia's Athletes of the Year for 2012. Maric shared the male athlete of the year award with Nedzad Mulabegovic. The two-time Olympian came to Virginia last September, joining the staff as the team throws coach after serving as an assistant coach at the University of Florida in 2010 and 2011, and as an assistant coach at the ASK Split Athletic Club in his native Split, Croatia. Maric said he selected Virginia in large part because of the type of student-athlete the university attracts. "UVa has a great history, tradition, a high level of education, and of course a well-known commitment to excellence," Maric said. "Many have physical talent to become good throwers, but not many have the commitment and true desire to endure the process, focus and hard practice that will make them not just better athletes, but better individuals as well. "UVa traditionally attracts focused and dedicated athletes who know what they want and are willing to work hard to succeed. That is the main reason I took this position." Virginia is hoping Maric's Olympic experience and 19 years of involvement in track and field at elite national and international levels will translate into sustained performance and consistency from the Cavalier throwers. "I think my knowledge and experience could help those who are motivated in becoming a high-class athlete and competitor," said Maric, a graduate of the University of California and the 2009 NCAA champion in the discus. "Not only have I been an Olympian, but I have worked and trained four winter and two summer Olympians for the Vancouver and London Olympic Games. "With good quality work in these great conditions at our university, I am confident Maric was honored as that the Virginia track one of Croatia's Athletes and field will have a of the Year for 2012 after few Olympians in Rio finishing 17th in the discus 2016." at the London Olympics. Photo courtesy UVa In addition to almost 20 years of experience, Maric brings a well-rounded background in addition to a commitment to safeguarding the health of throwers. It's those aspects of his coaching persona that Maric feels will allow him to be a strong coaching presence for his athletes. "My experience, the fact that I have competed in two Olympic Games, as well as helped six other athletes to do the same, should give my athletes confidence that I can help them do the same," Maric said. "Also, having seen and been through many pleasant and not so pleasant things of this sport, I can guarantee my athletes that they will reach their maximum body potential in the safest and most professional way, while surrounded by, very important, constant positive atmosphere." Throughout his career Maric has been a positive influence on fellow athletes and now is looking to make that a career, and Virginia has the good fortune of being his professional coaching stop. — Greg Waters
