hoo's hot Recognizing the "Who's Hoo" in UVa athletics — Cavalier student-athletes, past, present and future who are making news around the world of sports. Julia Elbaba ◆ Women's Tennis After the rookie went 14-1 in singles play in the fall and became the first player in school history to reach the singles final of the All-American ITA Championship, she was listed No. 4 in the first ITA singles rankings of 2013. The Oyster Bay, N.Y., native is now the highest-ranked player in program history, surpassing the No. 11 ranking of Alison Cohen in 1995. Elbaba leads the way for a team that is ranked 11th nationally and returns four starters from last year's squad that won a school-record 20 matches and reached the NCAA round of 16 for the second straight campaign. Jarmere Jenkins ◆ Men's Tennis The fourth-year from College Park, Ga., won his first major collegiate singles title Nov. 11, when he took the honor at the ITA Indoor Intercollegiate Championship. Jenkins entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed, but became the third Cavalier to win the prestigious event and fourth to win a major collegiate singles title. UVa swept both major ITA singles championships in the fall, with third-year Alex Domijan being crowned champion at the ITA All-American Championship in October. Virginia is just the second school to win both titles in the same year with different players, joining Stanford in 1995. Telia McCall ◆ Women's Basketball The 6-1 forward tallied her third straight double-double in the Cavaliers' 78-59 win over NC State Jan. 13. McCall, a fourth-year from Marietta, Ga., notched 15 points and 11 rebounds in the victory and played a crucial role toward the end of the first half when she scored six points during an 11-0 run for the Cavs. She was averaging 8.4 rebounds, the fifth-best mark in the ACC, and 7.4 points per game as of mid-January. In addition to pacing the team in rebounding, McCall led Virginia with 12 blocked shots. Matt McLean ◆ Men's Swimming and Diving The swimming and diving volunteer assistant anchored the United States men's 4x200-meter freestyle relay team to a gold medal at the 2012 FINA Short Course World Championships Dec. 13 in Istanbul. It marked the fourth international gold medal for the 2011 UVa graduate, who was also a part of the relay team that took the gold in the same event at the 2012 London Olympics. McLean is one of the school's most decorated studentathletes ever after he won the 2011 NCAA championship in the 500-yard freestyle, capping a career that saw him earn 15 All-America honors, 17 ACC gold medals and three ACC Swimmer of the Year titles. Jedd Moore ◆ Wrestling The fifth-year 157-pound wrestler led then-No. 19 Virginia to a sixth-place finish at the prestigious Southern Scuffle Jan. 2. The Mount Vernon, Ohio, native became the second Wahoo to win a gold medal in the event's 10-year history. Moore, who rose from No. 16 to No. 13 in the individual national rankings, finished 5-0 to lead the way for six Cavaliers placers, but needed wins in a pair of close matches to reach the top of the podium. He topped Missouri's Kyle Bradley, 2‑0, in the semifinals and forced overtime in the championship match, where he claimed a 3‑1 victory, thanks to a takedown with 41 seconds left in the suddenvictory period.
