prep profiles 2014 Oklahoma Gunslinger Could Be U-M's Man At QB With Michigan's transition back to the pro-style offense under head coach Brady Hoke and offensive coordinator Al Borges, a different type of quarterback will be needed than those that were recruited under the previous coaching staff. Gone are the days of Denard Robinson — one of the most gifted runners ever at U-M, but a limited passer — and in come the signal-callers more like Devin Gardner and Shane Morris. Taller players who can really throw the ball are needed. Athleticism is a bonus, not a necessity. Since U-M didn't take a quarterback in the 2012 class, the position will be a priority for 2014. While Morris, the 2013 commitment, is an excellent passer, Michigan will need to build depth at the position. Norman (Okla.) North four-star David Cornwell could be the beneficiary of Michigan's shifting focus. The 6‑5, 215-pounder is hoping to be one of the first quarterbacks offered by the Wolverines in the class. "They like me, because I'm a tall quarterback who can throw it and that really fits their system of a pro-style offense," Cornwell said of Michigan. "They're planning on offering three or four, and basically what they said is, 'First one to accept it. If you commit to us, we'll commit to you.' You're not allowed to take any visits anywhere else, which I totally agree with. If I'm lucky enough to be one of the offerees, they'll be high on my list." Cornwell showed his Michigan interest this fall by visiting Ann Arbor for the David Cornwell ✪✪✪✪✪ North High School Norman, Okla. Position: Quarterback Ht.: 6-5 • Wt.: 215 Wolverines' 45‑0 shellacking of Illinois Oct. 13. He liked what he saw and also had a chance to talk to Borges, who also coaches U-M's quarterbacks. "I really want to get some more time with Coach Borges before I make my decision," he said. "I want to see how he coaches, because I didn't really get to see that. "I want to see how he is one on one with the guys and see how he handles it when you do something wrong." Borges has dropped by Cornwell's school since the end of the Michigan season, and the quarterback would like to make a trip up to Ann Arbor at some point this winter. Although he currently holds offers from only Indiana and Auburn, Cornwell had the Wolverines near the top of his list, as is reigning national champion Alabama. UCLA and Arkansas are among the other schools he is showing interest in and would like to see. Although the Michigan coaching staff has yet to make any determinations about which quarterbacks to offer in the 2014 recruiting class, Cornwell has the type of skills they're looking for — and an offer could come soon. — Tim Sullivan
