Seven years ago, freshman center Andrew Cogliano was in similar skates coming off a win with Team Canada, and it wouldn't take the rookie long to get back in the groove, scoring two goals with three points against Bowling Green. The Wolverines were 1-2-0 in three January games when they started a home-and-home series with the Falcons. Aiming to capture the CCHA regular-season title, the Maize and Blue needed to sweep, especially coming off a 2‑0 loss at Michigan State. "It was sudden death this weekend," Cogliano Cogliano scored a pair of goals said. "We cannot afford to lose these games in and added an assist to help the the CCHA race. We came out soft and Michigan Wolverines to a 6‑1 victory over State took it to us. So this weekend, it had to be Bowling Green in January 2006. photo by wolverine photo different." Cogliano had notched eight goals and 11 assists in his first 17 games in a Michigan uniform, but had gone scoreless in his first three contests since the World Junior tournament. He was desperate to end his drought before it became a slump, and he would tally his first marker of the night less than five minutes into the game, staking U-M to a 2‑0 lead that would grow exponentially throughout the evening. "We always seem to have bad starts, especially at Michigan State," Cogliano said. "We needed a good start. So when Andrew Ebbett got the first goal and then I got the second, we got a good jump on the game. We came prepared and ready for the second period." Cogliano picked up an assist on Michigan's third marker of the night and hit the back of the net himself for goal No. 4 among the three the Maize and Blue scored in the second period en route to a 6‑1 win. The freshman would finish his first season with 12 markers and 16 assists, and would tally 24 goals and 50 points in his sophomore year. — Michael Spath
