Michigan's average is significant in that the Wolverines have never lost a game under Beilein when scoring 80 points, and they've posted an average very close to that mark. Meanwhile, the Wolverines continue playing very solid defensively for a team so young. They allowed an average of 59.5 points per game through Jan. 21, behind only Wisconsin (55.8), Ohio State (57.9) and Michigan State (58.4) in the conference. That meant Michigan stood second in the league in scoring margin, beating opponents by a very healthy average of 19.8 points per game. Indiana, with an average victory margin of 23.8, represented the only Big Ten team winning by bigger spreads. The Wolverines were still the Big Ten's best shooting squad, through the early part of the conference race. They'd connected on 51.0 percent, with only Indiana (50.2) also above 50 percent. The Hoosiers (41.3 percent) led the Big Ten in three-point shooting, with Michigan second at 41.0 percent. Michigan proved to be the conference's third-best free throw shooting squad through 18 games, connecting at a 71.4 percent clip. Only Indiana (74.3) and Iowa (71.5) were better. Michigan opponents were shooting 40.7 percent against the Wolverines, U-M's field goal defense ranking no better than eighth in the league.
