  michigan football U-M Hires Roy Manning To Coach Outside Linebackers R oy Manning let it slip. Before Michigan could make a formal announcement, the former Wolverine posted on his Twitter page that he was the new U-M assistant coach, hired to fill the void created by Jerry Montgomery's departure Feb. 23. Manning, who will coach outside linebackers, could not contain his excitement. "When Coach [Brady] Hoke got word that Coach [Jerry] Montgomery may be leaving, he gave me a call, and I couldn't believe it, to tell you the truth," Manning said. "I almost dropped the phone. He told me there may be a position open, and eventually I came in and interviewed and got the ball rolling. "In the past 10 years, I have been in 10 different places. Since graduating, I have moved every year. It has been tough, moving around and trying to get adjusted everywhere I go, but it finally feels good to come home." Manning played four seasons with the Maize and Blue from 2001-04, starting 10 games at outside linebacker in his senior season. He recorded 39 tackles, including five for loss. "Playing outside linebacker during his career, it is easy for him to fall into that position, and I feel very confident in him being able to do that," defensive coordinator Greg Mattison said. The Saginaw, Mich., native spent Manning played four seasons with the Maize and Blue from 2001-04, starting 10 games at outside linebacker in his senior season, and now he will be coaching the position for the Wolverines. photo by tim sullivan three years in the NFL, bouncing between the Green Bay Packers, Houston Texans, Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars and Cincinnati Bengals. He transitioned to coaching in 2010, serving as a defensive assistant with the Cincinnati Bearcats, then an offensive grad assistant at Michigan in 2011, and returning to Cincinnati in 2012 to be the running backs coach. "When I got into coaching, that was what I set out to do, coach linebackers and defense," Manning said.
