neath that has been Brendan's forte,"
Ferrigno said. "I don't know that we'll
change that much because it has been
successful for us, and sort of takes
some off Brendan's plate.
"Brendan is very accurate from just
about anywhere. I don't want to screw
him up."
Wile's big leg will continue to be an
asset on kickoffs, and now that he's
proven himself in pressure situations,
he could earn a few more opportunities to split the uprights on long-distance attempts.
"That's Brady Hoke's call, but a lot
of times you don't want to do that
because of the field-position game,"
Ferrigno said. "But I thought both
times we did it was real crucial for us
— Michigan State, and against South
Carolina he had a big one.
"We're going to tend to want to
pooch the punt there and make them
go 90-plus yards, but there are times
where Coach feels like, 'Hey, let's do
this,' and Matt is very capable."
The biggest question mark this
spring is at punter. Hagerup was suspended before Michigan's bowl game
for violating team rules and has not
been reinstated. Wile will handle the
punting duties in his absence — and
potentially even when/if Hagerup returns — after averaging 39.2 yards on
29 punts over the past two seasons.
"I am real confident in Matt," Ferrigno said. "Matt is good at everything
he tries. He's a hard-working guy, he's
a technician, and he's had training all
through his career as a young kid and
through high school and now here. He
works at all those skills; I'm confident
he can do whatever we ask him to
do." ❑
