Nose Tackle: Sophomore Ondre Pipkins 6-3, 308 pounds Pipkins came into his freshman season with a lot of expectations, and he lived up to them, seeing the field in all 13 of the Wolverines games. A forceful presence at 6-3, 308, Pipkins totaled seven tackles, including 0.5 for loss. Backup: Redshirt junior Richard Ash Defensive End: Redshirt sophomore Keith Heitzman 6-3, 277 pounds Someone will have to replace the consistent presence of defensive end Craig Roh. Heitzman was a solid backup, playing in 12 games last year, mostly to give Roh a breather. Heitzman finished with seven tackles, including one for loss. Backup: Redshirt freshman Tom Strobel and BTN.com. He played in 12 games, tallying 31 tackles, including four for loss and one sack. Bolden could see playing time at either middle linebacker or weakside outside linebacker. Backup: Fifth-year senior Mike Jones Weakside Outside Linebacker: Junior Desmond Morgan 6-1, 227 pounds Morgan has tallied 18 total starts, including nine last season. Morgan was third on the team in tackles (81) last year. He also posted 5.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks and two passes broken up. Along with Bolden, Morgan could play either middle linebacker or weak- Strongside Outside Linebacker: Redshirt junior Jake Ryan 6-3, 241 pounds Ryan emerged as arguably the Wolverines' best defensive player last season. He did a little bit of everything, leading the team in tackles (88), tackles for loss (16), sacks (4.5) and forced fumbles (four). He also broke up three passes. Ryan will be one of the Big Ten's best returning defenders in 2013. Backup: Fifth-year senior Cam Gordon Middle Linebacker: Sophomore Joe Bolden 6-3, 222 pounds Bolden emerged as an up-and-coming talent in 2012, earning All-Big Ten freshman team honors from ESPN.com As a sophomore, linebacker Desmond Morgan ranked tied for third on the team in tackles, with 81 stops in 2012. photo by lon horwedel
