10 THE WOLVERINE OCTOBER 2019   INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS on ESPN or ESPN2), before welcom- ing Wisconsin to Crisler Center Feb. 27 at 7:00 p.m. and then hitting the road once again for Ohio State March 1 (4:00 p.m. on CBS). The Wolver- ines will close out the regular season away from home when they travel to Maryland March 8 for a noon contest on FOX. This season will be the first for head coach Juwan Howard at the helm, after former head man John Beilein led the program from 2007-19 before departing for the Cleveland Cavaliers during the offseason. The new U-M coach will have key veterans in senior guard Zavier Simpson, senior center Jon Teske and junior forward Isaiah Livers at his disposal, after the trio helped lead Michigan to a 30-7 record (just the fifth 30-win season in school history) and a berth in the Sweet Sixteen last year. ❏ MICHIGAN'S 2019-20 BASKETBALL SCHEDULE Date Opponent (TV) Time (ET) Nov. 1 Saginaw Valley State* (BTN+) 7 p.m. Nov. 5 Appalachian State (BTN) 7 p.m. Nov. 12 Creighton# (FS1) 6:30 p.m. Nov. 15 Elon^ (BTN) 7 p.m. Nov. 22 Houston Baptist (BTN+) 7 p.m. Nov. 27 vs. Iowa State& (ESPN) 12 p.m. Nov. 28 vs. Alabama/North Carolina & (ESPN/2) 1:30/6:30 p.m. Nov. 29 TBA& (ESPN/2) TBA Dec. 3 at Louisville! Ybarra is once again off to a hot start this year, tying for the team lead in as- sists with three through five starts for 2-2-1 Michigan (as of Sept. 16). Here a few other interesting facts about the Ann Arbor native: Nickname: "My first name is Marc, so there's not much to play off of there. A few of the guys just call me Yits because of my last name." Favorite restaurant in Ann Arbor: "I love going to No Thai." Best meal he can cook by himself: "Teriyaki salmon. It's about the only thing I can make myself." Hobbies: "I live in a house where we play a lot of FIFA [the soccer video game]. I also like to play online chess on my phone." Favorite TV show: "I used to watch 'Psych' on the USA channel with my family. It's a detective show and is pretty funny." Favorite movie: "'Shrek.'" Dream vacation: "I've never been to Europe, so my dream vacation would be to go to either Italy or Spain and study out there. I'd also like to see a Champions League [soccer] game, because I've heard the crowds out there are wild." Favorite place he's been to: "The coolest trip I've ever gone on was right before high school when I went to Costa Rica. It was with an Olympic Developmental Pro- gram Team, and we spent five or six days there, playing against their National Team and a couple of club squads. We also had time to explore." Favorite professional athlete: "[Former professional soccer player] Michael Car- rick. I always loved watching him play before he retired." Role model: "I have a few of them, including my three older siblings and my dad, who works at U-M. One of my brothers is six years older than me and played for Detroit-Mercy. I always tried to compete against him growing up. My siblings set a very high bar and were good role models for me." Sports he plays besides soccer: "When I was little, I played rec baseball and a year of AAU basketball. I love basketball and played it with friends all the way through high school. My mom wouldn't let us play football." Why he chose Michigan: "When I was going through the recruiting process, I wanted to explore different options. I looked at schools further away and visited a couple campuses, but wound up picking Michigan. I'm living on campus, but it feels like I'm away from home and am still getting the full college experience." What he hopes to do after soccer: "My first goal when I leave college is to play professionally. I'm not sure what I want to do yet for a career once my soccer days are over. I've studied business and thought I wanted to do accounting last year, but had some conversations with my brother and older friends who suggested I do some- thing in marketing. I'm going to meet with the career service to try and figure that out, because I could pretty much see myself anywhere." His overall experience at Michigan: "'More than expected' would be how I'd de- scribe it. Everything has fallen into place on the field — I've gotten chances to play a lot of minutes and serve important roles. The friendships I've made through the team have been incredible. There are more people here than I was expecting who care about how I'm doing, both on the field and in the classroom." — Austin Fox Ybarra has started 44 of the 45 matches he has appeared in since stepping on campus.
