Holloway noted that the newcomers are adjusting to the realities of major college swimming. "I would say the expectations might have surprised a lot of them," Holloway said. "Obviously there's high standards in this program, and the team holds everybody accountable. "I think the expectations kind of rocked a few of them pretty hard. Now they under- stand what it means." All together, Holloway has a team with a few headliners remaining but a lot of oth- ers ready to start making names for them- selves. "It's kind of exciting, because we haven't been in this situation in a while," Holloway said. "We're just a young team, but I think in a way it's nice because for the first time in four years we're the underdog. "I think we can kind of use that to our advantage." ■ James A. The College Swimming Coaches Association of America ranked NC State third nationally in its preseason poll. • The Summer Olympics return in 2020 in Tokyo, Japan, and that means that swimmers are allowed to take what is termed an "Olympic redshirt." The student-athletes can freeze their eligibility and train for the Olympics. One swimmer at NC State has been confirmed using the Olympic redshirt. Junior Giovanni Izzo, a native of Italy, will sit out the season for NC State. Izzo is a valuable member of NC State's relays and was the anchor swimmer on the Pack's second-place 200 freestyle relay at nationals.
