22 ■ THE WOLFPACKER TRACKING THE PACK TORRY HOLT Football Alum Twenty-one years ago while playing then-No. 13 Syracuse on a Thursday night in Carter-Finley Stadium, former NC State wide receiver Torry Holt be- came the school's all-time leader in receiving yards after catching six passes for 132 yards in a dominating 38-17 Wolfpack win. Holt was back on the field Oct. 10, during another Thursday night game against Syracuse, this time to be honored for his selection into the College Football Hall of Fame. He posed for a photo while holding an honorary plaque with NC State's director of athletics Boo Corrigan and his predecessor, Debbie Yow, who was representing the National Football Foundation. Earlier that day, Holt had said that his wish was to catch one more pass at Carter-Finley Stadium. Fortunately for him, NC State had an NFL quarterback in the house to deliver the ball — Mike Glennon of the Oakland Raiders was in town on his bye week. After Holt was honored, Glennon tossed Holt a fade pass in the end zone, and Holt made the leaping catch while getting a foot down in the corner for good measure. Just like old times. Holt, who played for NC State from 1995-98, finished his Wolfpack career with 191 receptions for 3,379 yards and 31 touchdowns. He still owns the NC State record for career receiving yards and scoring catches, the latter by 10 more over his nearest rival. Holt remains third all time in most catches, and his career average of 17.7 yards per catch ranks fourth among players with a minimum of 35 receptions at NC State. After college, Holt went on to become a Hall of Fame candidate in the NFL. In 11 years as a pro, 10 with the St. Louis Rams and one with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Holt hauled in 920 passes for 13,382 yards and 74 touchdowns. He twice led the NFL in receiving yards and once topped the league in recep- tions. The seven-time Pro Bowler helped the Rams win the 1999 Super Bowl and return to it a year later. — Matt Carter/Photo by Ken Martin wolfpacker spotlight
