W hen spring practice began March 16, the Wolverines were already without a few key players — tailback Fitzgerald Toussaint and cornerback Blake Countess among them — and while U-M's injured are on the mend and expected to play in the Aug. 31 opener against Central Michigan, teammates Jake Ryan and Russell Bellomy will not be ready for the first game. Ryan and Bellomy each tore an ACL and both are expected to miss most, if not all, of the 2013 campaign. Ryan was the first to go down, suffering his tear early in spring ball. He underwent surgery March 28, and could possibly return before the end photo by per kjeldsen of the year, though head coach Brady Hoke said the timetable was uncertain. "I'm not a doctor, but he could possibly be back by mid-October," Hoke announced to the surprise of the media. "Some people react differently." Ryan was an All-Big Ten secondteam performer for the Wolverines during his redshirt sophomore season in 2012, leading the team in tackles (88), tackles for loss (16) and sacks (4.5).
