The Heat signed him for the rest of the year after initially inking him to two 10-day contracts. The big man even made the starting lineup for one game due to injuries. "We'll see what happens," head coach Erik Spoelstra said when reporters asked if Howard might get into a game. "He has filled the role that we wanted, and he does it as well as anybody. He brings incredible veteran leadership. It is tangible, and it is real. It felt odd not having him around. … He is in with two feet regardless of what his role is." Howard, 40, is the third-oldest player in the NBA behind Knicks forward Kurt Thomas and Clippers forward Grant Hill. He scored all seven of his points this year in his first start, a 96-95 win at Cleveland April 15 in which he also grabbed two rebounds.
