www.BLUEANDGOLD.com OCT. 31, 2020 15 UNDER THE DOME 115 Years Ago: Oct. 28, 1905 Notre Dame defeats American Medical (from Chicago) 142-0 in its largest margin of victory ever — and safe to say, an unbreakable program record. Even with just a 25-minute first half it was 111-0 at the intermission, and the second half was limited to eight minutes. 100 Years Ago: Oct. 30, 1920 Trailing powerful Army 17-14 in the second half at West Point, Notre Dame halfback George Gipp leads his team to a 14th straight victory (27-17), finishing with 150 rushing yards and 123 passing yards in his greatest single-game performance. 65 Years Ago: Oct. 29, 1955 In a battle at quarterback between two future College Football Hall of Fame inductees, Paul Hornung's No. 9-ranked Irish defeat George Welsh's No. 4-ranked Navy Midshipmen, 21-7, in the rain at South Bend. 40 Years Ago: Nov. 1, 1980 Now the head coach at his alma mater, 25 years later Welsh's 5-2 Midshipmen lose 33-0 to No. 3 Notre Dame in Giants Stadium, with Fighting Irish tailback Jim Stone leading the way with 211 rushing yards. More notable, Notre Dame moves up to No. 1 this day when top-ranked Alabama loses to Mississippi State and No. 2 UCLA falls to Arizona — a team the Irish had just defeated 20-3 on the road a week earlier. Despite winning the national title in 1977, it is the first time in Dan Devine's six years as head coach (he had already announced he was stepping down at the end of the year) Notre Dame reached the top spot during the regular season. 20 Years Ago: Oct. 28, 2000 No. 19 Notre Dame sees Air Force rally from a 28-10 fourth- quarter deficit to knot the score at 28 in the final frame while out- gaining the Irish 265-30 — with Falcons kicker David Adams lining up for the game-winning chip- shot 28-yard field goal on the final play of regulation. Notre Dame safety Glenn Earl, whose assignment is to watch for a fake, disobeys his role and ends up blocking the kick. After Air Force takes a 31-28 lead in over- time, Irish flanker Joey Getherall scores on a nine-yard reverse — his third tally of the game — for the 34-31 victory. Notre Dame goes on to finish the regular season 9-2 to earn a Fiesta Bowl bid, and it results that December in a five-year contract extension through 2005 for fourth-year head coach Bob Davie. 15 Years Ago: Oct. 29, 2005 Speaking of contracts, the Irish don't play on this date, but the university announces that head coach Charlie Weis — 5-2 so far in his first season — has signed an extension through the 2015 campaign, which "locks him up" for 10 years, or through 2015. "In a very short period of time, Charlie has clearly and impressively demonstrated the ability to take the Notre Dame program where we all want it to go," Notre Dame athletics director Kevin White said. 5 Years Ago: Oct. 31, 2015 Sophomore quarterback DeShone Kizer accounts for 442 yards of total offense — 299 passing while completing 23 of 36 throws and 143 rushing on 17 attempts — yet No. 6 Notre Dame has to scrap and claw to the end to record a 24-20 victory at unbeaten (7-0) and No. 21 Temple. Kizer, who earlier ran for a 79-yard touchdown, connects with wide receiver Will Fuller on a 17-yard back-shoulder touchdown with 2:09 remaining for the winning score. Temple had just gone ahead min- utes earlier on a field goal. Cornerback KeiVarae Russell then ends the Owls' final drive with a diving interception at his 35-yard line. — Lou Somogyi Anniversaries In Notre Dame Football History: Oct. 26-Nov. 1 Safety Glenn Earl (No. 19) blocked a potential game-winning field goal on the final play of regulation that allowed Notre Dame to escape with a 34-31 overtime victory versus Air Force in 2000.
