As a kid, Tobel competed in gymnastics. When she got to Walled Lake Western High School in Commerce, Mich., the coach of the track and field team convinced her to use that agility and flexibility to give pole vaulting a try. Although she still holds the KLAA conference record with a jump of 11-3, Tobel never thought it was anything more than a fun hobby she did after school. Upon graduation, Tobel chose to attend Michigan for its strong academic reputation.
