C O M Penn State is welcoming back redshirt junior defensive lineman Hakeem Beamon after he missed the 2021 season for undisclosed reasons. PHOTO BY RYAN SNYDER ON THE PROGRESS OF PENN STATE'S DEFENSE UNDER MANNY DIAZ … One Brent Pry "habit" that I hope goes away with Diaz is our pass coverage being too loose. With Joey Porter Jr. and the full house of aggressive corner- backs, we should play a tighter "D" on the other team's receivers. This is especially important with Purdue's Aidan O'Connell, who is a lights-out accurate passer. Too often we see a receiver catching a ball with five Nittany Lions in the same zip code camera shot. — SW Fla Lion Hakeem Beamon just looked so good at defensive tackle in the Blue-White Game, and he seems such a good fit in Diaz's defense as an aggressive three-tech who can penetrate the pocket and cause mayhem in the middle. PJ Mustipher and Beamon as starters, and then any rotation/combination of Coziah Izzard, Jordan van den Berg, Zane Durant and Dvon Ellies sounds really, really good. When was the last time we had a legit six-man group able to rotate at defensive tackle and keep the line fresh? Needless to say, if we have strong interior defensive line play, this would help tremendously our young and inexperienced, but super talented ends like Chop Robinson and Dani Dennis-Sutton. — Lamgol I'm thinking with a lot of positive reinforcement that Beamon may be our best defensive tackle this year. PJ is going to be double-teamed every play, plus it usu- ally takes one full season mentally to get back. Hopefully everyone supports Beamon in his return to give him confidence and ensure he's focused. — AK1967 ON THE FUTURE OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL … I think as money and transfers become a bigger influence, the passion will be subdued in many fans. I'm not saying that players don't deserve the money or the ability to transfer, but having players play for their school has really been what separated it from a pro sport. — Got GSPs It's all about TV revenue now, when college football traditionally has been about the tailgating, road trips and pride for an institution. Things are changing, and I'm not sure you're going to be able to convince 100K+ people to invest that kind of money on a weekly basis if the experience feels much more like free agency. — lilromeo No matter how much some people kick and scream about "the end of college football," I can promise you that 20 years from now, Beaver Stadium will be just as full as it is today. And by then, our players will be earning the salary and benefits they rightfully deserve. — ChrisGelso ON NEW SONGS THE BLUE BAND SHOULD ADD TO ITS REPERTOIRE … If they ever wear a black-and-pink throwback uniform, then AC/DC's "Back in Black" is a must! — Chandler- Pearce My vote: "Wooly Bully" by the unforgettable Sam The Sham and The Pharaohs. — bobe Scrap the '90s stuff. … Norfolk State, Alabama State, Jackson State and Bethune-Cookman are so great because their directors don't reuse the same stuff. Yeah, you've got your one or two staples and fight songs, but as some- one who's seen HBCU bands in person ... they choreograph, they innovate. We should do the same. It shouldn't be the same song every game, it should be new stuff each year. — NorthernStatePSU "Shout." — foxnit "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted." — Fox Chapel Lion II 4 S E P T E M B E R 2 0 2 2
