10 CAVALIER CORNER 1973 — Basketball, field hockey and tennis became the first women's varsity sports at the University of Virginia. Field hockey was the first sport to compete, facing off against Roanoke College on Sept. 29, 1973 at Nameless Field. 1973 — Barbara Kelly (basketball), Ches- ley Garrett (field hockey) and Lindsay Burn (tennis) were named the head coaches for Virginia's first women's varsity sports. 1976 — Swimmer Dorothy Dilts became the first female All-American in UVA history. 1976 — Wendy Weinberg was the first Virginia female athlete to compete in the Olympics, where she won a bronze medal at the Montréal Olympic Games in the 800-meter freestyle. 1977 — The University of Virginia offered the first athletic scholarships for female student-athletes. 1977 — Tennis players Beth Bondurant and Barbara Goldman claimed the first women's ACC individual championship for Virginia. 1981 — The women's cross country team won UVA's first women's ACC team championship. 1981 — The women's cross coun- try team won UVA's first women's NCAA team championship. 1981 — Aileen O'Connor was Vir- A TRADITION A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE OF EXCELLENCE Celebrating 50 Years Of Title IX At Virginia Among many other accolades, Dawn Staley was a two-time winner of the Naismith Trophy as the women's college basketball player of the year in 1991-92 and received the Honda Cup award as the collegiate woman athlete of the year in 1991. (Photo courtesy UVA) BY WILLIAM JARRETT F ifty years ago, Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 was codified into federal law, stating, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." The landmark civil rights decision opened the door for women to have access to equal opportunity for education. Athletics programs at schools also fell under the umbrella of Title IX, allowing women to also have the same athletic opportunities as their male counterparts in the form of participation, scholarships and additional benefits. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX being passed as law, we take a look at 50 of the most standout and defin- ing moments and milestones accomplished by our women's sports programs, student-athletes and coaches here at the University of Virginia and beyond since June 23, 1972.
