cavalier profile ANTHONY JOHNSON Graduate Student • Football Growing up in Coconut Creek, Fla., just north of Fort Lauderdale, Anthony Johnson was introduced to fishing by his grandfather, Cary Doe. He and his family made frequent trips to Alligator Alley and a recreational pastime quickly turned into a passion for the Cavalier cornerback. He became hooked on the sport. "It was something I grew to love," said Johnson, a transfer from Louisville who is pursuing a master's degree in educational psychology at Virginia. "I would watch on-demand videos of the old Bill Dance Outdoors show and videos on YouTube, and taught myself how to bass fish." As one of six UVA players named to the Reese's Senior Bowl preseason watch list, Johnson might have to keep fishing as a recreational activity until his football playing days are over. But he is already figuring out a path to turn his passion for fishing into a career. "It is something I am very serious about," said Johnson, who used an internship last summer with Ashland-based Green Top Sporting Goods to learn firsthand about the business. "I got to spend time with the CEO and shadow the staff. I learned a lot about how the business is run. From finances to the marketing side, I took in a lot, and one day I'll use that to open my own fish and bait business." Johnson is interested in luring in more than just customers. "I plan on giving back to the community and I want to create a non-profit for kids to have the opportunity to learn fishing lessons and hold tour- naments for them," he said. "I want those kids to have the opportunity to do something they may not otherwise get." Just like his grandfather did for him. — Jim Daves • Photo courtesy UVA 32 CAVALIER CORNER
