OCTOBER 2022 7 cavalier sports No.1 Overall was where Virginia graduate student midfielder Thomas McConvey was selected by Rochester Knighthawks in the 2022 National Lacrosse League Draft Sept. 10. He is the second Cav- alier to be drafted by a professional lacrosse league in 2022, joining former Virginia stand- out attackman Matt Moore, who was selected No. 4 overall by the Archers Lacrosse club in the Premier Lacrosse League Draft. McConvey, a graduate transfer from the University of Vermont, will suit up for the Cav- aliers for the first time in the spring of 2023. NOTABLE NUMBERS HOO'S TALKING " We had opportunities to win the game. To have those opportunities against the No. 1 team in the country is just a credit to the entire team's attack and defense, and their mentality to win it. And their mentality to do it together." — UVA field hockey head coach Michele Madison on her team's 3-2 loss to No. 1-ranked Northwestern Sept. 11 " I honestly look at this season as Year 1. I know we played last year, but we just kind of were thrown into it. I think that what we're doing right now is really exciting, and the way that recruiting is going is super exciting. I love what's happening there." — UVA volleyball head coach Shannon Wells on her team's 6-1 start to the season, which was the program's best since going 6-0 in 2014 " I'm not really a vengeful person. I'm motivated from within. I just do the best that I can. I work my tail off. I've got an incredible work ethic. I think that that comes out a lot in my performances." — Former Cavalier Danielle Collins during her run to the round of 16 in the U.S. Open in August/September, when she knocked off two-time champion Naomi Osaka for the first time in her career 8 , 181 Career yards of total offense — a school record — for fourth-year UVA quarterback BRENNAN ARM- STRONG through two games this season. In the first game of the season against Richmond Sept. 3, he compiled 246 yards passing and 105 yards rushing to leapfrog Shawn Moore (7,987) and Bryce Perkins (7,910) on UVA's all-time list. He broke the record on a 64-yard touch- down run against the Spiders. Armstrong also eclipsed 1,000 career yards rushing in that game, making him only the fourth Cavalier quarterback ever (Bill Dudley, Perkins and Moore) to reach that milestone. He's also within striking distance for the program's career passing yards re- cord and career touchdown mark, needing just 4 touchdown passes and 253 yards passing to eclipse both records. 11 Goals for former UVA and cur- rent Carolina Courage forward Diana Ordóñez, a figure that topped all rookies and ranked second overall in the National Women's Soccer League through Sept. 11. Ordóñez was tabbed as the NWSL Rookie of the Month for August after tallying 5 goals. 7 Consecutive shutouts for the UVA women's soccer team to close out its nonconference schedule 7-0-1. That stretch of 648:08 minutes without allowing a goal is the fifth longest in program history. As of Sept. 13, the Cavaliers ranked second in the coun- try with a 0.125 goals against average. 6 True first-years have started a game at offensive tackle for the Cavaliers in program history. On Sept. 3 vs. Richmond, McKale Boley joined D'Brickashaw Ferguson (2002) as the only members of that group to crack the starting lineup in the season opener. The other four are Brad Butler in 2002, Morgan Moses in 2010, Eric Smith in 2013 and Chris Glaser in 2017. 5 Cavaliers have posted a 100-yard rushing effort in their first career starts dating back to 1986, with Perris Jones joining that exclusive club this year with a 104-yard effort vs. Richmond Sept. 3. The other four are: Bryce Perkins, 108 yards in 2018; Jerrod Washington, 107 yards in 1992; Marcus Wilson, 129 yards in 1987; and Chris Warren, 105 in 1986.
