It means PSU did very well. I'll take that over the alternative of PSU sucking it up on defense and nobody looking at him. — LaJollaCreek Might be a fun deep dive to see what the odds are, but it seems way less likely that defensive coordina- tors get head coaching jobs after one year with a new program, as opposed to offensive coordinators. Dan Lanning was DC at Georgia for three years before get- ting the Oregon job, and Georgia won the SEC East twice during that tenure. Brent Pry took way longer than that. I'd guess any job that Manny would want would come after his second season at the earliest. Plus, he's got a pretty decent gig. James Franklin seems to have no problem giving him full control of the defense. He's not doing media availabilities all the time and gets more time with his family. Might as well enjoy it for an extra year or four or five. — Manny17 I have no insight into Manny's desire to remain in Happy Valley long term. I can say that changing coordinators (especially from the outside) every year is a problem. Likewise, having a coaching staff remain unchanged for too long is unhealthy. I think having coaches leave for promotions after a few years is good, as it allows you to bring in new coaches/ideas and promote internally. — Got GSPs I'd be happy with two years, especially with the defensive talent we have and that is committed to us over the next few years. I just hope that Nebraska doesn't court him now that Scott Frost has been fired, or even Auburn after they fire Bryan Harsin. If I had to guess, though, I would think that Diaz would be content to stay here for at least two years and would be next in line if Franklin left for whatever reason. This, though, is highly unlikely to occur anytime soon. — Jerademan ON THE LINEBACKER CORPS … I agree with those who say that Tyler Elsdon and Kobe King are doing OK [at middle linebacker]. They were solid against the run and a good back in Tank Bigsby [of Auburn]. Where I'm concerned is against the pass. … Neither Elsdon nor King looks comfortable in coverage. … That's why, to me, our best chance against Ohio State and Mich- igan is to use Curtis Jacobs at Mike and Abdul Carter at the Will. Jacobs has the skills to cover and knows the calls at Mike. It'll never happen, but it would probably give us the best chance to win these big games. — yogininja13 Elsdon has been more than fine on run downs. Obviously, there is a preference for a more complete player, but he's not been a problem to this point, and I think he'll hold up fine against the heavier run teams. If King surpasses him on the depth chart, it will be more about King taking it than Elsdon losing it, in my opinion. — ftlawdog 4 O C T O B E R 2 0 2 2 Diaz has prioritized turnovers in his first season as Penn State's defensive coordinator. Through four games, the Nittany Lions were tied for 13th in the FBS with 9 take- aways (5 fumble recoveries, 4 interceptions). PHOTO BY DANIEL ALTHOUSE W W W . B L U E W H I T E O N L I N E . C O M
