NOVEMBER 2022 THE WOLVERINE 47 2022-23 BASKETBALL PREVIEW ally embraced that role, and that's come from her experience also. She's a lot more confident in herself and in her own skin to really make the younger players feel welcome and understood and listened to. She's done a tremendous job." Both Kiser and Brown used their fifth- year options to return from the COVID-19 eligibility pause, which was a huge devel- opment for the team's identity and lead- ership. One final season in the maize and blue should help to pad some career stats, but the goals are much larger. "As a team, [our goal is] to continue to take this program to new heights," Kiser said. "Individually, I'm not really super- focused on that, to be honest. I'm defi- nitely more team-minded right now." Hillmon's presence on last year's team allowed Michigan to have a go-to player in the post when it needed a basket. That luxury is no longer there, and, inherently, it has to look different based on roster construction. "Last year, we were actually No. 1 in the country in points scored out of a post touch," Barnes Arico said. "This year, way different than last year, we're gonna shoot the basketball. "We're probably going to play four guards, which is going to be fun because a lot of teams in our league do that. So, we've just got to make sure that we're re- bounding and we have an edge to us." Sophomore guard Laila Phelia will be counted on to perform in a larger role af- ter being named to the conference's All- Freshman Team last season. U-M also brought in sophomore transfer Greta Kampschroeder from Oregon State, the first former McDonald's All-American in program history. Kampschroeder's addition should help U-M transform its on-court look with some more offensive punch from the pe- rimeter. "She has been phenomenal thus far," Barnes Arico said. "She just fits the cul- ture of our program. She's an incredibly hard worker. I came back to the gym [one night] to pick up something from the of- fice at 10 p.m., and I looked into the gym, and there was Greta getting up shots. She has just been unbelievable. "She is a great scorer, high-IQ player, can run all day. … She's going to be able to play multiple positions for us, anywhere from point guard all the way through the four. She's just a great kid, great student, great family. Really going to give us some- thing that we needed this season." The Wolverines might look different in terms of their style of play, but the men- tality when they take the court will go un- changed. Barnes Arico's program is built on grit, and it walks the walk. That will Senior guard Maddie Nolan earned All-Big Ten honorable mention a year ago. She hit 68 3-pointers while shooting 40.5 percent from beyond the arc.
