"I think [this team] is scrappy, and that's our Michigan identity anyway," Barnes Arico said. "We really believe that we say it, but we back it up and we believe it. We're gonna be feisty, we're gonna be scrappy. We're gonna play with fire and with passion, and have fun. "But I also think we're gonna be up- tempo. We're going to be fast. We're gonna shoot a lot more threes than we traditionally have. We're gonna be playing through our incredible guards differently than we have in the past. A very different team, but the same culture." The Big Ten coaches voted the women fifth in the conference ahead of the sea- son, while the media had them rated sixth in the preseason poll. The Wolverines would have it no other way. "We're in a different role now where people aren't picking us to necessarily be as successful as we've been before," Barnes Arico said. "And I think the play- ers inside our program have a little bit of a chip on their shoulders for that, and they have a little bit of a 'something to prove' mentality." ❏ 2022-23 Women's Basketball Roster No. Name Pos. Springboro, Ohio Averaged 1.1 points in 4.9 minutes per game, checking into 19 games off the bench. 11 Greta Kampschroeder G 6-0 So. Naperville, Ill. Transferred into the program from Oregon State this offseason. First former McDon- ald's All-American in U-M women's program history. Indianapolis, Ind. Appeared in 16 games off the bench last season, averaging 0.6 points and 0.8 re- bounds in 7.2 minutes per game. 13 Kate Clarke G 6-1 Fr. Carmel, Ind. Indiana All-Star selection was ranked No. 99 overall and a 4-star recruit by ESPN com- ing out of high school. Made the 2022 Supreme 15 All-State senior team. 20 Alyssa Crockett F 6-2 Fr. Westfield, Ind. Finalist for Indiana Miss Basketball ranked 48th overall and a 4-star prospect from ESPN and was a McDonald's All-America game nominee. 22 Chyra Evans F 6-2 Fr. Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia Led New South Wales to an Under 20 Australian Junior Championship gold medal in 2021 and averaged 18.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Used COVID pause to return for fifth season, earning All-Big Ten honorable mention honors and started all 32 games, averaging 9.3 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 31.2 minutes played per game. 34 Izabel Varejao C 6-4 Sr. Vitoria-Espirito Santo, Brazil Reserve appeared in 24 games, averaging 2.0 points, 0.9 rebounds in 4.7 minutes per contest. 44 Cameron Williams F 6-3 Jr. Chicago, Ill. Saw action in 30 games off the bench, averaging 2.7 points and 1.4 rebounds in 6.7 minutes per night. Sophomore Laila Phelia made the Big Ten All-Freshman Team in 2021-22 and is expected to play an increased role in what could be a four-guard lineup for the Wolverines this season.
