DECEMBER 2022 THE WOLVERINE 15   INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS FIVE YEARS AGO, 2017 — Michigan outscored No. 23 UCLA in overtime, 13-4, to capture a 78-69 win at Crisler Center on Dec. 9, 2017. Moe Wagner cashed in 23 points and Charles Matthews 20 with 8 rebounds in the rousing home win over the Bruins. Aaron Holiday poured in a game-high 27 points for UCLA. The Wolverines had to scramble back from a 15-point deficit in the second half to even reach the extra period. Once there, they dominated overtime. U-M responded to the 15-point hole by scoring eight straight, ultimately pulling within two, 60-58, on a pair of 3-pointers by Wagner. Eli Brooks sank a pair of free throws in the final minute of regulation, tying the score for the first time since 8:16 remained in the first half. Michigan took control early in overtime, Zavier Simpson and Matthews knocking down back-to-back 3s in the opening min- ute to give the Wolverines a 71-65 edge. Following four UCLA points, U-M poured it on for three straight buckets, a 77-69 lead, and a secured comeback victory. "We did everything we could to play some inefficient basket- ball," coach John Beilein said after the game. "But when we really needed to suck it up and get work done at the end, we got it done." 10 YEARS AGO, 2012 — Michigan owned the Barclays Cen- ter and West Virginia in an 81-66 triumph on Dec. 15, 2012. Trey Burke paced the Wolverines with 27 points and 8 assists, while Tim Hardaway Jr. poured in 25. John Beilein's team maintained the hot hand all the way in the neutral site game in Brooklyn, N.Y., shooting 56 percent from the floor. They locked down the Mountaineers, allowing only 39 percent shooting. U-M built an 11-point halftime lead and then broke out early in the second half. Hardaway's five points triggered a 9-2 run that thrust the Wolverines firmly into control, 52-34, just 2:16 into the second half. "Both of them surprise me sometimes on what they can do," Beilein said of Burke and Hardaway. "There are still some things we can't teach that they are able to do. Both have the same pas- sion for the game, and it shows." 25 YEARS AGO, 1997 — Michigan flexed its basketball muscle against Duke on Dec. 14, 1997, taking down the Blue Devils in an 81-73 contest at Crisler Arena. Robert Traylor scored 24 points and Louis Bullock added 23, helping Michigan overcome a 17-point deficit against the visitors. "After all the things we've been through in the past year, this game shows that we're still Michigan and we're still here," noted Traylor, who scored 15 second-half points. That led a 46-27 second-half uprising by Michigan, which appeared in deep trouble until the Blue Devils bedeviled their coach in the closing 20 minutes. "Our team is a really good basketball team, but we didn't play like it in the second half," Mike Krzyzewski said. "We didn't play well in transition, and Michigan capitalized on that. It seemed like butter was on the ball for us, and that had a lot to do with the game pressure." — John Borton THIS MONTH IN MICHIGAN ATHLETICS HISTORY College Football/Football American $19.95 US Cover Design: Chuck Romano E-Mail: PowerGroup@comcast.net Blog: gobluefootballhistorian.com • COLUMBUS • ANN ARBOR THE GREATEST FOOTBALL STORY EVER TOLD THE GREATEST FOOTBALL STORY EVER TOLD MICHIGAN VS. oHIO sTATE 1897 - 2021 Why "The Game" is The Greatest Rivalry in College Sports MICHIGAN VS. oHIO STATE 1897 - 2021 The Michigan vs Ohio State pigskin rivalry is a legendary story of the two winningest programs in college football history.
