DECEMBER 2022 THE WOLVERINE 31   MICHIGAN FOOTBALL Nov. 4 PURDUE Ann Arbor Nov. 11 at Penn State University Park, Pa. Nov. 18 at Maryland College Park, Maryland Nov. 25 OHIO STATE Ann Arbor Dec. 2 Big Ten Championship Indianapolis, Ind. U-M'S FUTURE NONCONFERENCE OPPONENTS Michigan has filled its nonconference slates through the 2025 season, meaning that additional scheduling for 2026 and beyond should be forthcoming in the rel- atively near future. Here is a look at the out-of-conference teams that currently are on the books to face the Wolverines through 2034. Year Opponent Date 2024 FRESNO STATE Aug. 31 at Texas Sept. 7 ARKANSAS STATE Sept. 21 2025 NEW MEXICO Aug. 30 at Oklahoma Sept. 6 CENTRAL MICHIGAN Sept. 13 2026 OKLAHOMA Sept. 12 2027 TEXAS Sept. 11 2028 at Washington Sept. 9 2033 NOTRE DAME Sept. 3 2034 at Notre Dame Sept. 2 MICHIGAN OFFENSE IS IMPROVING IN THE RED ZONE The Michigan offense faced some scru- tiny after red zone struggles against Penn State and Michigan State forced the Wol- verines to settle for field goals instead of touchdowns. Grad student kicker Jake Moody made four field goals against PSU in a 41-17 win, and five more in a 29-7 drubbing of MSU. The Wolverines then scored touch- downs on six trips out of seven in the red zone at Rutgers in a 52-17 victory, though it took four downs on two drives inside the 5-yard line. "The previous game [Michigan State] we played where we got down there four times, and we didn't get the ball in the end zone twice, two of those were the results of losing yardage," head coach Jim Har- baugh said. "I really wanted to see more [moving forward]. We got the ball on the 5 or the 6 in this [Rutgers] game, and we were going straight ahead." They did, and they were successful. Michigan is sixth nationally in red zone scoring including field goals and has been moving up steadily in touchdown percent- age. The Wolverines are now No. 41 at 67.27 percent after three nice performances, in- cluding red zone touchdowns in 3-of-4 attempts in a 34-3 win over Nebraska. After the MSU game, co-offensive co- ordinator Matt Weiss said it was up to the staff to improve the red zone offense. "We're really just talking about a cou- ple drives," Weiss said. "Specifically, two drives inside the 10 where we need to score touchdowns in the last game that we didn't," he said. "We need to coach better. It starts with that, and we need to play better "It's harder to run the ball because there's constricted space; all the defend- ers are closer to the point of attack. It's also harder to throw the ball because you don't have the ability to stretch the field vertically. "It's harder to move the ball in gen- eral, and certainly that takes away a lot of things you can do, both run game and pass game. You need a red zone-specific offense." OFFENSE Pos. No. Name Ht. Wt.
