DECEMBER 2022 THE WOLVERINE 55 OLYMPIC SPORTS Men's Cross Country Michigan finished second at the Big Ten Championships (No. 9 Wisconsin claimed the title) at the U-M Golf Course on Oct. 28, led by senior Tom Brady's fourth-place finish. He was U-M's lone first-team All-Big Ten selection. From there, the focus shifted to national competition with the Great Lakes Regional on Nov. 11, where the Wolverine men finished third and received an invite to their second straight NCAA Championships. The meet will take place in Stillwater, Okla., on Nov. 19 and be broadcast via ESPNU for both the men's and women's cross country teams. Women's Cross Country The 21st-ranked U-M women finished second at the Big Ten Championships on Oct. 28 just eight points behind cham- pion Michigan State. Seniors Erica VanderLende (first team) and Sam Tran (second team) received All-Big Ten honors after turning in top-10 finishes. The Wolverines went on to a third-place team finish at the Great Lakes Regional on Nov. 11. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Nov. 19, the 21st consecutive season that the Michigan women will perform on the title stage. Field Hockey The No. 4-ranked Wolverines had their season come to an abrupt end on Nov. 11 in an overtime loss to No. 16 Albany in a first-round NCAA Tournament game at Phyllis Ocker Field. U-M had a 1-0 lead late in the contest thanks to a goal from graduate forward Tina D'Anjolell but was unable to hold on. The Wolverines ended their season with a 14-6 record. Just five days earlier, U-M captured its eighth Big Ten Tour- nament title, breaking a tie with Penn State for the most in conference history. Michigan defeated three top-10 teams — No. 9 Iowa, No. 3 Penn State and No. 4 Northwestern (2-1 in the final) — en route to the Big Ten championship. Fifth-year senior Kathryn Peterson was named the Big Ten Tournament MVP. Men's Soccer U-M's season concluded on Oct. 30 with a 3-2 loss at home to Penn State, dropping its record to 4-10-3 on the season (1-6-1 in Big Ten play). Freshmen standouts Nicholas Kaloukian (led the team in shots with 45) and Nolan Miller (a team-high 1,408 minutes played) earned Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors for their performances during the 2022 campaign. Senior Christian Pulselli was named U-M's Sportsmanship Award honoree. Women's Soccer The Wolverine women saw their season end on Oct. 23 with a 1-0 loss at home vs. Indiana, dropping their final re- cord to 7-8-3 (2-6-2 in conference play). Graduate student Meredith Haakenson and sophomore Avery Kalitta received All-Big Ten accolades for their show- ings during the year. Haakenson was named to the All-Big Ten third team after tying for second on the team in goals and assists (5 each) and tied for the team lead in points with 15. Kalitta earned the team's Sportsmanship Award after starting every match and logging 1,355 minutes this year. Volleyball Michigan went 1-1 on the weekend of Nov. 11-12 with a 3-1 win (23-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-23) over Northwestern and a 3-1 loss to Illinois (27-29, 21-25, 25-22, 19-25) with both matches taking place at Cliff Keen Arena in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines are 15-11 on the season and are back in action Nov. 18 at Purdue and Nov. 19 at Maryland. The final two matches of the regular season take place at Iowa (Nov. 23) and at home vs. Rutgers (Nov. 25). Men's Swimming And Diving A 3-0 start to the season headlines the early action for the No. 16-ranked U-M men in the pool after a 184.50-113.50 victory over Purdue and a 204-95 win over No. 24 North- western on Nov. 4-5 in Ann Arbor. Next up is the Tennessee Invitational in Knoxville from Nov. 17-19 before a break. The Wolverines resume action on Jan. 14 at Indiana. Women's Swimming And Diving The No. 14-ranked women are off to a 4-0 start to the new season with wins in early November over Eastern Michigan (227-70), Ohio State (211-86) and No. 18 Northwestern (162.5-137.5) in Ann Arbor. They will also head to the Ten- nessee Invitational and resume their season in January. Wrestling Fifth-ranked Michigan is 2-0 to kick off this year and took six matches in a 23-12 win over No. 16 North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Nov. 13. Fifth-year senior and No. 3-ranked heavyweight Mason Parris (a first-period pin, his fourth of the season), redshirt sophomore 133-pounder Dylan Ragusin (ranked No. 5, earned a 20-5 technical fall), No. 12 redshirt junior Cole Mat- tin (141), No. 22 Chance Lamer (149), No. 3 redshirt senior Will Lewan (157) and No. 14 graduate Matt Finesilver (184) all recorded individual victories for the Wolverines in the event. — Anthony Broome Maize & Blue Highlights With a 2-1 win over Northwestern on Nov. 6, Michigan's field hockey team captured its eighth Big Ten Tournament title, breaking a tie with Penn State for the most championships in conference history.
