32 THE WOLVERINE ❱ AUGUST 2023 2022-23 YEAR IN REVIEW BY CLAYTON SAYFIE M ichigan athletics en- joyed another success- ful season in 2022-23, especially from the per- spective of winning championships. The Wolverines won 13 Big Ten titles, a school and conference record, after taking home 12 the year prior. Michigan's 13 titles were far and away the most of any league institution, with Penn State finishing second with five, and Maryland and Northwestern following with four apiece. Due to disappointing seasons for a few of the school's most proud programs — men's basketball, softball, men's swim- ming and diving, volleyball and water polo — though, the Wolverines finished 11th in the Learfield Directors' Cup, their lowest placement since 2014-15 (19th). There's still plenty to celebrate. The Maize and Blue had four athletes who were named national player of the year in their respective sports: Sierra Brooks (women's gymnastics), Adam Fantilli (hockey), Paul Juda (men's gymnastics) and Mason Parris (wrestling). Three Wolverines won a total of five individual NCAA championships: Fred Richard in men's gymnastics (all-around, horizontal bar and parallel bars), Parris in wrestling (heavyweight) and Savan- THE BEST OF THE BEST Superlatives For Michigan Athletics' Stellar 2022-23 Year Jim Harbaugh (football) and Kevin Sullivan (women's track and field, indoor and outdoor) led their teams to a combined three Big Ten titles in 2022- 23.
