AUGUST 2023 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 37 ❱ MICHIGAN RECRUITING NOTEBOOK he had time to set up and deliver to the middle of the field." Davis committed to Michigan in March over Clemson, North Carolina, Penn State, Tennessee and others. On3 has him rated as its No. 13 quar- terback, while Rivals slots him at No. 3 and 247Sports at No. 7. Davis is ranked as the No. 7 quarterback and No. 65 overall recruit nationally per the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average of the four major recruiting media services. "There aren't many in the class who can pick apart defenses like Davis," wrote 247Sports of his Elite 11 performance. "His sweet spot is usually the short to intermediate parts of the field, but he showed in the 7-on-7 setting on Friday that he can push the ball to the deeper third. That's encouraging for the future Wolverine as we haven't really seen much of that from him during recent in-person evaluations." — Zach Libby FIVE-STAR 2025 QB BRYCE UNDERWOOD SETS DECISION DATE Belleville (Mich.) High five-star quar- terback Bryce Underwood, the nation's No. 1 overall prospect in the 2025 class, will announce his verbal commitment on Jan. 6, 2024. "I'm excited because it's coming pretty quickly," Underwood told The Wolverine. "I'm making sure that I'm not getting too overwhelmed, but I'm pretty excited for this journey." Underwood's upcoming commitment date will be in memory of his great-grandmother, chosen because it was her birthday. It'll be the conclusion of his journey that had a stop at Wayne State University in July for the annual Sound Mind Sound Body seven-on-seven event. At 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, Underwood compiled double-digit touchdowns in a three-game non-padded exhibition. "I thought I did pretty well," Under- wood said. "It was nice to showcase how much I've been working this offseason. The receivers did a great job, and I'm proud of them." Three weeks earlier, Underwood was inside Al Glick Field House at U-M to participate in a local 7v7 tournament that Michi- gan hosted, the fourth time he made the short drive to Ann Arbor in three months. The efforts of quarter- backs coach Kirk Camp- bell to communicate with Underwood and his family weekly since January have propelled the Wolverines into high consideration for the No. 1-ranked signal- caller and player nationally in the junior class. This past March, Un- derwood checked out two Michigan spring camp prac- tices and later went back to Ann Arbor in late April for a personalized tour around the facilities. "It was a great time getting to compete in front of the Michigan coaches and for them to see me live," Underwood said. He appeared at running back Donovan Edwards' youth football camp on July 1 to assist with quarterback instruction. Edwards enrolled at Michigan right before Underwood began high school. But recently, they've developed a close friendship through their connection with the Sound Mind Sound Body program and proximity. "It was definitely a great experience working with another player from the Michigan area," Underwood said. "We got together with our guys, put the plan into place and executed." At Edwards' camp, the No. 1 in-state recruit was able to throw to Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams, one of the many special guests. "That was fun," Underwood said. "It was a great time with him and all of the receivers who came out." As for his plans to return to Michigan at the end of July for the BBQ at The Big House, Underwood admitted that he's still undecided. However, it's clear Michi- gan will be a strong contender for his ser- vices. Along with Michigan, Underwood is also considering the likes of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Ohio State, Oregon and Penn State. — Zach Libby Charlotte (N.C.)
