AUGUST 2023 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 7 ❱ SCOREBOARD RENOVATION ON TRACK FOR SEASON OPENER The $41 million renovation of Michigan Stadium is nearing its completion and remains on schedule to be fin- ished for the season-opening football game on Sept. 2 against East Carolina. The privately funded stadium project is headlined by larger scoreboards and new stadium lights, and it was approved in spring 2022. As of mid-July, work on the back of the video board in the north end zone was nearly completed, and the iconic block M was visible. The south end zone's work was not as far along, but new frames had been constructed and in place for both structures. Michigan Stadium used temporary lights for its games until permanent lighting was installed in late 2010. The first night game in Big House history came against Notre Dame in September 2011. Michigan also is spending more than $5 million to enhance the audio equipment at the Big House, in addition to millions going toward upgrading the control room and production studio at Crisler Center, last refurbished in 2013. The production studio is used for Michigan Stadium, Crisler Center, Yost Ice Arena, Ocker Field, Ray Fisher Stadium and Alumni Field, U-M Soccer Stadium and the South Campus Performance Center. In addition, it is the home of Michigan Sports Television (MSTV), which produces the "Inside Michigan Football" and "Inside Michigan Basketball" shows, and more. Barring any setbacks, the new production elements at Michigan Stadium will make their debut in a "Maize Out" scheduled for the season opener in Ann Arbor. — Anthony Broome PHOTO COURTESY MICHIGAN PHOTOGRAPHY
