OCTOBER 2023 9 cavalier sports A rmani Dawkins joined Vir- ginia's athletic department as the deputy athletics director for competition excellence in August. She brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experi- ence at the Power Five level and has already started making an impact as the Cavaliers are look- ing toward the future of college athletics and the Atlantic Coast Conference. A former student-athlete her- self, Dawkins was responsible for supporting the sport programs and monitoring student-athlete experience, academic progress and welfare at Oklahoma before joining UVA's senior staff. As she continues to get settled in her position at Virginia, Dawkins will largely be handling the student- athlete and sports program success in an ever-changing environment. Her intrigue in this challenge to come to UVA was sparked by the current leadership and success Virginia has. "As I've advanced in my career, I've con- tinued to be drawn to opportunities that provide challenge and growth opportunities while influencing leadership at the highest levels," Dawkins said. "I was intrigued by the relentless pursuit of excellence, both academically and athletically, that was dis- played by the senior leadership team and the head coaches I was able to spend time with prior to making my decision to join the department. "This obviously begins with Dr. Carla Wil- liams' clear, unwavering commitment to car- ing for the holistic development of student- athletes coupled with an understanding of how the landscape of intercollegiate athlet- ics is changing." Virginia's continued success can largely be attributed to the coaches and staff that have come through Charlottesville and established a history with winning and academic prowess. It is one thing Dawkins noted specifically that serves as a strength for the department, but is also a challenge as making sure the department remains healthy from top to bottom. "The strengths far outweigh the chal- lenges [at UVA]," Dawkins said. "There are some of the very best staff, administrators, coaches and student-athletes in the coun- try at UVA, and everyone is fighting for the common good of each other. "The landscape around us is changing, which of course brings many challenges departmentally, especially in the areas that interface with our student-athletes daily. We must continue to think of ways to support our 'team behind the team' and grow the next great generation of leaders." Her time on Grounds thus far has mostly been spent listening and learn- ing to continue to under- stand the department and how it functions. Inevitably there will be times that you have to jump into projects right away, and one in par- ticular popped up in her short tenure with the Cava- liers, as she has already seen one huge change based on the pending conference realignment in 2024. "With the addition of Cal, SMU and Stanford to the ACC, I'm spending a lot of time assessing what that will look like for our teams from a scheduling and competi- tion standpoint, as well as discussing the resources needed to support our student-athletes and head coaches in the expanded conference," Dawkins said. Dawkins also serves as Virginia's Title IX coordinator and is the sport administrator for the Cavalier women's basketball and men's lacrosse programs. Just a month into her time at UVA, Dawkins has already been able to experience the people that make Virginia special. She is ready to contribute to the success of the department as she continues to bolster UVA's strengths and add her own contributions. — Kristin Thurman behind the scenes Deputy Athletics Director For Competition Excellence Armani Dawkins 1.
