OCTOBER 2023 11 cavalier sports Anthony Colandrea Football The first-year quarterback from St. Petersburg, Fla., was named the ACC Rookie of the Week Sept. 11, becoming the first UVA player to earn that honor since the 2020 season when wide receiver Lavel Davis Jr. won it twice. In his first collegiate start, Colandrea completed 20 of 26 throws for 377 yards with 2 touchdowns — all single-game Virginia first-year records — in UVA's 36-35 loss to James Madison Sept. 9. His 377 pass- ing yards were the eighth-most in a single game of any FBS quarterback through the first three weeks of the season and the most by any FBS first-year quar- terback in 2023. Tyler Kennedy Field Hockey The third-year goalkeeper from Houston was named both the NFHCA Division I National Defen- sive Player of the Week and the ACC Player of the Week for the first time in her career in mid-September. She logged 4 saves in Virginia's 1-0 victory against No. 14 Harvard Sept. 10, her second shutout of the season and fifth of her career. Through nine contests, Kennedy led the ACC and ranked 46th in the country in saves per game (4.00). She also was among the nation's top 25 in both goals-against average (22nd, 1.329) and save per- centage (tied for 24th, .750). Malik Washington Football The graduate student from Law- renceville, Ga., was tabbed as the ACC Offensive Receiver of the Week Sept. 25, after setting new career highs in receptions (10), receiving yards (170) yards and touchdown receptions (2) in UVA's loss to North Carolina State Sept. 22. Washington had 107 yards after contact and had a long reception of 59 yards against the Wolfpack. His last TD catch came with 36 seconds remaining and allowed UVA to tie the game at 21 before it fell 24-21. Through four games, Washington led the ACC in receptions per game (7.0), receiving yards per game (114.75), total receptions (28) and total reception yards (459). The Cavaliers posted four consecutive shutouts, beating Nevada and Radford by identical 5-0 scores, tying Michigan 0-0 and blanking George Mason 4-0. West Virginia finally scored the first goal of the season against UVA in the 84th minute of its 2-1 loss to the Wahoos Aug. 31. UVA (5-2-3 overall, 0-2-1 ACC) allowed only 6 goals in its first 10 matches this season for a 0.600 goals-against average, which was tied for 28th in the country as of Sept. 25. 500th Football game played in Scott Stadium was UVA's matchup with James Madison Sept. 9. It is the fourth-oldest sta- dium in the ACC and hosted its first game against VMI on Oct. 15, 1931. 170 Receiving yards for UVA gradu- ate student wide receiver Malik Washington versus North Caro- lina State Sept. 22, making him the ninth Cavalier pass catcher to hit that milestone. The 170-yard outing for Washington marked his third straight 100-yard game, after he compiled 119 yards versus James Madison Sept. 9 and 141 at Maryland Sept. 15. Only two other Cavalier wide receiv- ers have ever produced three consecutive 100-yard games — Germane Crowell in 1997 and Dontayvion Wicks in 2021.
