SPRING 2024 11 cavalier sports Claire Curzan • Swimming The second-year from Cary, N.C., was named the Best Female Swimmer at the 2024 World Aquatics Cham- pionships in Doha, Qatar, in February. She won a total of six medals: four gold (50, 100, and 200 back- stroke, and mixed medley 4x100 relay), one silver (100 butterfly) and one bronze (mixed freestyle 4x100 relay). She is just the third swimmer in World Championships history to sweep the 50, 100, and 200 distances of a single stroke, and just the second female. Curzan, who transferred to UVA after one year at Stanford, is redshirting this year and will com- pete for the Hoos starting in the fall of 2024. Morgan Schwab • Lacrosse The fourth-year attacker from Fairport, N.Y., she set a single-game UVA record with 8 assists in a 20-5 rout of Richmond March 6. Three days later, she be- came UVA's career assist leader while tallying 2 goals and 4 helpers in a 12-10 victory at Notre Dame. With her second assist against the Irish, she surpassed the previous mark of 129 set by Lindsay Sheehan (1984-86). Schwab, who earned a spot on the Tewaara- ton Award watch list, boasted 135 career as- sists through nine matches this season. Connor Shellenberger • Lacrosse The graduate student at- tacker from Charlottesville became Virginia's all-time assists leader in a 19-15 win at Towson March 9. He tied his career high of 10 points (3 goals, 7 assists), surpassing Tim Whiteley (159 career assists). After his 7-as- sist day, he had 160 in his career, the most among all active Division I players. Ten days later, Shellenberger became the Cavaliers' career points leader with 1 goal and 5 assists in a 16-10 triumph over Albany, passing Matt Moore (277 career points). Through eight games this season, he had 282 career points (116 goals, 166 assists). HOO'S HOT Recognizing the "Who's Hoo" in UVA athletics — Cavalier student-athletes, past, present and future who are making news around the world of sports. HOO'S TWEETING 11 , 975 Fans watched Virginia knock off then-No. 5 Virginia Tech 80-75 at John Paul Jones Arena March 3 — the most ever recorded for a college women's basketball game in the state of Virginia. The previous record was 11,966, which was set at the 1994 women's Final Four at Richmond Coliseum. 4 Cavaliers were listed among Inside Lacrosse's top 50 male players in the nation prior to the start of the 2024 season: graduate student attacker Connor Shellenberger at No. 2, senior defender Cole Kastner at No. 15, graduate student attacker Payton Cormier at No. 28 and graduate student attacker Jack Boyden at No. 40. Only Duke (seven) and Johns Hopkins (six) placed more players on that list. 15 15 Years between UVA ath- letes earning Most Out- standing Wrestler of the ACC Championship. Prior to second-year 165-pounder NICK HAMILTON achieving the feat in 2024, the last Wahoo to do it was 197-pounder Brent Jones in 2009. Hamilton, the 10th Wahoo to receive Most Outstanding Wrestler honors, claimed the 94th individual ACC title in program history.
