The Cavalier women won their fifth straight conference title and their 20th in program his‑ tory. UVA captured a total of 17 events over the five‑day meet. 4 Victories versus ranked opponents — 91‑87 at No. 15 Florida State Jan. 21, 81‑66 over No. 20 North Carolina Jan. 28, 73‑68 at No. 20 Louisville Feb. 25 and 80‑75 versus No. 5 Virginia Tech March 3 — by the Virginia women's basket‑ ball team during the 2023‑24 season, mark‑ ing the first time since the 2008‑09 season the Cavaliers had that many such wins. Prior to Virginia naming Amaka Agugua‑ Hamilton head coach on March 21, 2022, the Cavaliers had lost 27 consecutive matchups to ranked opponents. Entering their contest against FSU, the Cavaliers were 3‑47 in their last 50 games against ranked opponents. The win over the No. 5‑ranked Hokies marked UVA's first over an AP top‑five foe since knock‑ ing off No. 4 Florida State on Feb. 16, 2017. " They mean a lot to this program, and that's the legacy that you want to leave. That's what we talk about all the time: You're going to be forever remembered for turning this program back around." — UVA women's basketball head coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton on her fourth-years .603 Winning percentage (94‑62 combined re‑ cord) for Virginia's 12 2024 opponents last season. UVA is now 4‑3 in the ACC semifinals during that stretch (the 2020 game was canceled due to COVID) and have gone on to win two championships (2014 and 2018). You get humbled, you eat your humble pie, and then you come back and fight and live with the results, and that's what these guys have done." — UVA men's basketball head coach Tony Bennett on his 2023-24 squad 2 Cavaliers earned All‑America honors in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Champion‑ ships March 9 in Boston: third‑year Margot Appleton and second‑year Gary Martin. Appleton finished fifth in the women's mile with a time of 4:29.07 — breaking her own school record — to earn first‑team honors. It marked the second time this season that she lowered the program record in the event. In the men's mile, Martin crossed the line in 4:12.44 to finish 10th and earn second‑team status. No. 1 National ranking for the V irginia men's tennis team's 2024 recruiting class, per TennisRe‑ cruiting.net. The Cavaliers' four‑man group garnered 18 of 19 possible first‑place votes in the rankings assessment poll. The class is led by Brazilian Joao Fonseca, who finished 2023 as the No. 1‑ranked player in the ITF Junior Rankings. He is joined by two other international players, Rafael Jodar of Spain and Canadian Keegan Rice. Jodar was ranked No. 11 in the ITF Junior Rankings with a 45‑6 career record in junior singles with six titles. Rice had a career‑high juniors ranking of No. 32 with five singles titles. The Cavaliers are also bringing in a Virginian, Stiles Brockett of Fairfax. The five‑ star Blue Chip prospect is ranked as the No. 10 overall recruit in the national rankings. 8 Home runs for the UVA baseball team in a 26‑12 victory over George Washington March 6. That is the second‑ most homers in a single game in program history. A school‑record seven different Cavaliers homered in the contest, including first‑year Henry Ford who hit 2 to become the first UVA true first‑year with a multi‑ homer game since Joe McCarthy in 2013. The school record for home runs in a game is 10 and was set on April 11, 1978, a 28‑5 win over Maryland in seven innings. 162 Assists for UVA rookie point guard Kymora Johnson, after she dished out 5 in a 58‑55 loss to Wake Forest in the ACC Tournament March 6.
