32 CAVALIER CORNER NCAA rules preclude the athletics de- partment from directly or indirectly as- sisting a high school to fund raise for its athletics program. For example, it's im- permissible for the athletics department to donate athletics equipment to a high school or donate tickets, memorabilia or similar items that will be auctioned to financially support an athletics program or team. If the athletics department receives a donation request that impacts a high school or a prospect, it will not be fulfilled. The athletics department is re- stricted by NCAA rules on this issue. Boosters aren't necessarily restricted as much as the athletics department is. Boosters may provide money to benefit a local high school athletics program in their community, as long as the ac- tion is independent of the athletics department, the donation is provided through the normal fundraising avenue established by the high school (e.g., GoFundMe), and the donation isn't ear- marked for a specific prospect. COMPLIANCE CORNER Wrestling Event Recap On Feb. 16, the Virginia Athletics Foundation hosted an event to cel- ebrate the completion of recent renovations of Virginia Wrestling's facili- ties at Memorial Gymnasium. VAF donors who supported the project were treated to a reception and tour led by Steve Pritzker, Deputy Athletics Di- rector and CFO. The renovated areas include the team's locker room, Hall of Champions, and Nutrition and Fueling Station. Donors also enjoyed seeing Virginia Wrestling in action as they competed against the Univer- sity of North Carolina that evening. Following the event, Coach Steve Garland said, "This event was special to me, so it got emotional at times. I have a connection with just about every name that is on those lockers. I have a lot of history with those folks and some of it goes back as far as 28 years, so this was a big night for me and for the program. The renovation provides a quality facility for our athletes which is desperately needed. That's the biggest thing. "This gets us in the fight now with recruits. Facilities matter — that's the truth of it. Now we can be proud when we walk a family through our space." Men's Basketball Reunion Recap On Feb. 17, the Virginia Athletics Foundation hosted the annual Virginia Men's Basketball Alumni Reunion. More than 100 men's basketball alumni, managers and their families re- turned to Charlottesville for events at John Paul Jones Arena. They were part of an electric crowd that cheered on the Hoos and witnessed an exciting 49-47 victory over Wake Forest. During the game, all reunion attendees representing seven decades of alumni were honored on the court with special mention of the 2014 ACC championship team's 10th anniversary. Following the game, alumni and guests joined the current coaching staff for a post-game reception in the CoStar Group Cavalier Club, highlighted by remarks from Dean and Markel Families Men's Head Basketball Coach Tony Bennett. "It's always great to have our basketball alumni back on Grounds," Bennett said. "It means a lot to our program that former players, managers and staff stay connected to our team and University. Their continued support is immeasurable, and I greatly appreciate all they have done and continue to do for this program."
