❱ INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS SEPTEMBER 2024 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 15 FIVE YEARS AGO, 2019: Michigan crushed Rutgers in its first Big Ten home game on Sept. 28, 2019, blanking the Scarlet Knights 52-0. Quarterback Shea Pat- terson threw for 276 yards on 17-for-23 passing, while the U-M defense pitched a shutout by limiting Rutgers to a mere 152 yards of offense. The Wolverines racked up 28 first downs to Rutgers' 10, and wasted no time in let- ting the visitors know an upset wasn't happening. Less than three minutes into the game, Patterson unloaded a 48-yard touchdown pass to Nico Collins, putting U-M on top, 7-0. Later in the opening period, Patterson scored himself on a 2-yard run, doubling Michigan's lead. The home team made it 24-0 at the half, adding another Patterson touchdown run, this time from 4 yards out, and a 33-yard Jake Moody field goal. The Wolverines poured on four more second-half touchdowns, includ- ing a 1-yard sneak by Patterson and a 1-yard plunge by backup quarterback Joe Milton. "When you're down and your back's against the wall, you've got to come out and fight," noted Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, one week after the Wolverines opened Big Ten play with a loss at Wisconsin. "You've got to sustain. You've got to work harder, work smarter. You've got to be tougher, mentally and physically. "That's the only way to do it, in our opin- ion. They really set themselves to doing that." 10 YEARS AGO, 2014: Brady Hoke's Wolverines led Miami (Ohio) by only a touch- down at the half, 17-10, but a shutout during the final 30 minutes allowed them to pull away for a 34-10 victory on Sept. 13, 2014. U-M quarterback Devin Gardner passed for 184 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the win. Wolverines running back Derrick Green scored 2 rushing touchdowns on his way to a game-high 137 rushing. Green's 1-yard touchdown plunge broke a 10-10 tie and allowed Michigan to go to the halftime locker rooms with a lead. Michigan did, however, turn the football over three times, giving the Wolverines 7 turnovers in three weeks. "We're really concerned," Hoke said afterward. "It's the ball-security issues we have to deal with, from top to bottom." 25 YEARS AGO, 1999: Lloyd Carr's Wolverines held off Notre Dame in a fierce struggle at home, 26-22, on Sept. 4, 1999. Anthony Thomas rushed for 138 yards and 2 touchdowns for the home team, while Tom Brady threw for 197 in a winning effort. Nothing came easy, though, with Notre Dame quarterback Jarious Jackson throw- ing for 302 yards to keep the Irish in it all the way. In fact, Michigan scored the go- ahead touchdown with only 1:38 remaining, on a 1-yard Thomas burst. The lead changed six times over the course of the contest, with neither team ever leading by more than six points. The Irish scored with 4:08 left, taking a 22-19 advantage on a 20-yard Jackson touchdown toss. Michigan answered with a 58-yard scoring drive, highlighted by Brady's 20-yard pass to wideout David Terrell (8 catches, 115 yards). Thomas did the touchdown honors, giving the Wolverines a huge rivalry win. "They hurt themselves with penalties in the end, and we took advantage of it," Carr said. "It was as hard a hitting football game as I've ever been in." — John Borton THIS MONTH IN MICHIGAN ATHLETICS HISTORY FOOTBALL SEASON NEWSLETTERS Exclusively For Wolverine Magazine Subscribers BE SURE TO GET YOUR EMAIL ON OUR LIST!* The Wolverine Now digital newsletter is emailed every Thursday and Sunday of game weeks during football season.
